The Lipstick League – week of 9.30.13

Question of the Week – What are some of your favorite hand creams for the fall and winter months?

EauMG’s AnswerOh, maybe you guys can help me out here. I have dry skin and need something heavy-duty. For years and years I’ve been using the unscented Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream during the day because it isn’t greasy and it’s unscented so it doesn’t interfere with perfumes (and I apply sunscreen over it). At night I use L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream. I think I need something richer than these. Any suggestions?

Clumps of Mascara – As if you needed any other reason to love Tarte, I have so graciously given you 5 Reasons Why Tarte Rocks. Tell your wallet “I’m sorry”.

EauMG – A name like “Hedonist” is a lot to live up to when you’re selling to card carrying pleasure-seekers, but EauMG thinks that Viktoria Minya Hedonist perfume lives up to its name! Rum, peaches, white florals and vanilla tobacco…indulgent.

Gouldylox Reviews – Looking for the perfect red? I’ve picked my favorites from pricey stores to drugstores. Which is your favorite?

My Beauty Bunny – has partnered with Wantable for a fantastic giveaway worth close to $600! Click here to enter to win a Stella McCartney Noemi Jungle Print Tote filled with cruelty free makeup from Au Naturale, Lavera, Brazen and more!

Nouveau Cheap – Nail polish that comes in little “vintage perfume bottles” and smells of red wine and Italian leather? Yes and yes. Come check out my review of four of the new Revlon Parfumerie Scented Nail Lacquers.

Pink Sith – is all aglow because of her new favorite facial scrub and cleanser from Suki.

Prime Beauty – Can an *ahem* older woman still give off a hip vibe? This old lady can with the Urban Decay Shattered Face Case! Take a look.

Phyrra – shares the best ways to organize your beauty stash! You’ll be surprised by some of the options!

we heart this – discovers a $3 eye liner that rivals brands 6 times its price. Click to see who makes it!

Beauty Junkies Unite – Amber reviews and swatches one of Urban Decay’s gift sets for the holidays, the Black Market 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil collection.

Chalkboard Nails – Big Brother is watching you in this eye pattern nail art inspired by George Orwell’s 1984.

Guest Post of the Week, as chosen by Clumps of Mascara – Annelise of Aunie Sauce is such an amazingly wonderful spirit. We first met when she emailed me about her struggle with trichotillomania and I’ve been following her journey through life, love, beauty, fashion and fitness ever since.

  1. I have used both of the hand creams you mentioned. And I still use them for day. But I sorta make my own hand cream for night time and when a heavier cream won’t get in the way. I use equal parts of a shea cream, coconut oil (or Cetaphil cream) and then add some avocado oil (yes, the stuff you cook with) to make it the consistency I want. I make small batches of this periodically through the winter. I love avocado oil and it seems to keep my skin soft and really helps with a couple of dry patches I have.

Sonoma Scents Studio has a lotion that has avocado oil it and i live it, but it’s a real splurge. So I get it now and than, but not on a regular basis.

    1. Oh, good idea. I have used shea by itself before but I’m thinking I could get a super small Mason jam jar and mix up something like you’ve described. My skin loves oils but I find oils a bit messy for the hands. The shea would help make it a texture like I like.
      Thanks!

  2. Yes, as aforementioned, unrefined shea butter is a great choice. You can find it whipped, too. It’s lighter. It also has natural sunscreen properties that you desire, so you can skip sunscreen. Coconut oil has natural sunscreen properties as well.

Unrefined cocoa butter is my choice for dry or even cracked skin. It is easily absorbed and leaves less residue, than any oil or butter I have tried. Moreover, I would like to note that when I use too much cream that has both water and oil in the mix, the hands get soaked very easily! When I use such creams to apply to the body with my hand, my hands suffer the same. Since I started using pure oils, my hands are in perfect condition and the palms/fingers don’t soak in a matter of seconds.

    1. I didn’t know that about the sunscreen which is really nice to know. My lips get a rash if I use a lip product with chemical SPF (avo’s, etc.) I’ll now be looking for a shea or coconut heavy lip balm.

I’m going to order some unrefined shea and cocoa butter today 🙂

  3. I rub Josie Maran argan oil into my hands every night (any argan oil will do, I think, though), and for hard core, keep-your-skin-on dry hand days: Lotil. Smells like an old-fashioned drug store; I assume it’s gluing my skin back together. But it works.
