The Lipstick League – Week of 9/29/14

Question of the Week: What’s the first beauty/makeup item that you remember coveting?

EauMG’s Answer: Where do I start? I was the type of kid that drew lipstick and witches all over my 1st grade report card…Anyway, I do remember my first makeup coveting. Let me take you back to the early 80’s. My mother who was really young when she had me; she was still “cool” and  up on the cosmetics and fashion. I would watch her apply her makeup which looking back where such stereotypical 70’s/80’s “glamour” Guy Bourdin-ish shades that are sure to be in the next NARS holiday collection or something…one day I decided I could do this. So I messily applied this thick, glossy bright red Lancôme liquid lipstick that smelled like roses over my lips, swiped some shimmery royal purple Maybelline eyeshadow onto my lids (and up to my brows) with a sponge tip applicator, spread some Ultima II foundation on my face with my fingers and then attempted to contour with some Sally Hansen Cornsilk Bronzer with a fancy gold powder brush. I thought I was glamorous as f*ck but in reality it was a big ‘ole mess. But, what made me do this, sneak into the bathroom and hunt for a patent leather makeup bag, was that tube of gooey red liquid lipstick. I coveted that so hard. Every day I wanted to wear it and eventually I did. No regrets. I also realize that I haven’t changed any. I still covet bright red liquid lipsticks.

  1. LOVE IT!

ok, so lipstick is sort of the gay litmus test or something (i even thought at one point no one would notice a NUDE lip in my 7 year old attempt to pull off concealer as lip wear.)

there was a few brief months in the early 90’s when i was sure if Robert Smith could do it… i could do it neatly. and i thought this very fashion forward until a drag queen explained i was playing with crack cocaine. probably. i quit. skincare had so much more to become helplessly, devotedly addicted to anyway.

(still, that 7 year old made bank doing makeup years later, although again- short leash. i can’t AFFORD to be a GOOD queen.)

    thanks for the memories!
