90's Almay Ad

The Lipstick League – week of 2.6.17

Question of the Week: Is there a beauty brand that you feel is in need of a makeover or overhaul? If so, what would you do to reinvigorate the brand?

EauMG’s Answer: Oh, this is such a great question! I can’t wait to see what the other LLers are saying. A lot of makeup brands have really stepped up their game over the past few years (like Wet n Wild and Maybelline) offering high-quality products in decent packaging. I think the biggest thing that should happen is brands should expand their complexion products to suit a spectrum of complexions. I think some of the biggest “perps” of a limited line that shouldn’t be limited are Almay, Neutrogena and IT Cosmetics. Let’s just talk about the makeup ad above. You mean Almay used to have a FULL shade range?! WTH happened from the 1990’s to now?! What is their excuse?!

Speaking of fragrances, I wish Bath & Body Works would fix their entire aesthetic. It’s so old, cluttered and dated. This is going to sound snobby but their labels all look like they were done by first semester graphic design students. Nothing about their packaging appeals to me. If it were up to me, I’d hire people with an eye better than mine to redo the packaging. OR AT LEAST, do a little brand that appears (and smells) more modern, minimal and more “Millennial”.

  1. Wow, I agree ‘WTH happened from the 1990’s to now?!’ It makes no effing sense why shades are so limited by certain brands. I don’t work in the industry, but I can’t imagine what lame cost-benefit analysis is driving their decision to only produce pale-people shades! Ugh it makes me mad and sad and disappointed. I want our culture to be better than this by now. 🙁

    1. I just assumed these brands were always like this but I guess that’s not the case!

They obviously thought it wasn’t “worth” it but it’s like if you don’t offer something, of course, your sales won’t be high in that area! I think this is changing now that brands see there is a market (duh) for a wide variety of shades not just like 6 rose-based beige-y shades.
