The Lipstick League – Week of 10.12.15

Question of the Week: When you make a “blind purchase” (buy a beauty product without ever having seen it in person), how important is it to you to read reviews first? Have you ever made a blind purchase without reading a single review?

EauMG’s Answer: For me, it’s really important for me to read reviews or if it is a color product, to look at swatches online. I’ve found myself in the makeup aisles of the drugstore looking up swatches and reviews of some $8 lipstick. With fragrances, I obviously read reviews. But, these days I rarely “blind buy” perfumes. I have been burnt a few times and I don’t have room for full bottles of things I don’t love. In the past, I’ve blind bought perfumes without reading a review. This was years ago when there were less blogs and social networking sites. Sometimes this worked well for me (stuff like Cimabue from DSH Perfumes or aroma M Geisha Noire). And I’ve had some I didn’t like such as a Prince perfume (don’t ask) and TokyoMilk Poe’s Tobacco. These days I don’t blind buy. That’s what samples are for (and I live in a place where I can go out and sniff it). Now with lipsticks…I buy whatever is dark, purple or velvety red. I can’t help myself. And with skincare, I buy what my dermatologist says to buy or what Paula says to buy. But, I do blind-buy a lot of Korean stuff. I can’t help it.
