Tauer PentaChord Verdant EDT Perfume Review

Tauer Pentachord Verdant EDT

The Tauer PentaChord series contains three perfumes. These perfumes contain 5 ingredients each. These are Tauer’s “simplified” creations.

I was hesitate to try the PentaChords since “simplified” rarely gets my attention. I’m so over the “one molecule” gimmick in the perfume world (Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume, Escentric Molecules, etc). Samples of these have ended up in my hands. Surprisingly, Verdant is not simple. Not simple at all.

Verdant is weird. When I first smell it, I get mint, crushed ivy leaves, smoky vetiver and ripe raspberries. All at once it’s aquatic, green, smoky and fruity. And because it’s minty, smoke, tobacco, I am reminded of menthol cigarettes. And menthol cigarettes reminds me of my younger days and hanging out with drag queens. The scent is cold, green, bleach-like, and sickly sweet. The base is more menthol ciggies with a dry, chemical amber.

When I wear Verdant, I’m always paranoid that people think I smell like a menthol ciggarette smoker that tried to cover it up with Bath and Body Works Sun-Ripened Raspberry body spray. Because I’m pretty certain that is what I smell like.

I don’t like it. But, I dislike minty and cool fragrances 90% of the time. Some people may find this brisk and refreshing. It reminds me of swishing my mouth with Listerine. It hurts but it’s refreshing. But, because it hurts, I rarely use it.

Notes listed include ivy, earth, leather, smoke, tobacco and amber. PERFUMER – Andy Tauer

Verdant is an odd one and I haven’t sniffed anything else like it. Try it if you like minty fragrances. Or if you like perfumes like CdG Play Green, L’Artisan Parfumeur Tea for Two, Malle Geranium Pour Monsieur, Cartier Pasha, and/or Guerlain Homme. I say Verdant is unisex. And it probably works best in warmer, humid climates.

Verdant has above average projection and longevity for an EDP and this is labeled EDT. This is the longest wearing “cool and minty” fragrance that I know of.

The 1.7 oz bottle of Verdant retails for $150 at MiN NY.

Victoria’s Final EauPINIONI wish I could sum it up for you. The best I can do is aquatic, green, minty, smoky, fruity. I am not a fan at all. It wears like menthol ciggies, mouth wash breath and raspberry body spray on me.

Tauer Pentachord Verdant was featured in my Perfume Matching Game – June Edition.

  1. My husband likes this one. He also likes Geranium Pour Monsieur. I get kind of a “forest floor from an anime planet” vibe from it. It’s definitely weird and otherworldly, although it has echoes of natural smells.

    1. I can see how someone could like this if they like Geranium Pour Monsieur – minty, fresh. This one is difficult for me to explain. It’s weird – familiar yet unusual. At least it isn’t like anything else!

  2. Hilarious review! I dislike menthol fragrances also! The tobacco, menthol, fruity combo sounds horrible to me!

    1. Its’ the cooling menthol that gets me. And the fruit is still a mystery to me. I hope I’m not the only person getting something fruity from this.
I feel if you’re ever near a bottle of this, try it. It’s a weird one and because of that it is worth trying. Who knows? Maybe you’ll like it 😉

  3. I’m glad you reviewed this. It’s really interesting. I can definitely see a love it/hate it thing for most people.

I was really intrigued by it, but only enough to wear it one time. And it is STRONG…

    1. There is nothing else like it. It’s not that I hate it. Sometimes I like it for a split second and then I don’t. It really is complex. I get something different each time.
I give it props for being a fresh, minty thing that lasts on the skin.

    1. Exactly. Sometimes I like it. Sometimes I don’t. And sometimes my tolerance for it is greater than others.
I’m noticing something in the comments. Men tend to like this one. I think they are used to fresh and metallic scents because of mainstream stuff and aftershaves. I find it interesting that men like this minty-metal-tobacco.

    1. You really never know. It’s weird and unlike anything else. I say try it if you can. Just for kicks if anything else.
