Lately I’ve been taking a short break from my usual roses and white florals and wearing chypres. The deal is that I don’t own many chypres so this makes me dig through my samples. I remembered that there was an Ayala Moriel perfume launched this year that I tried in the summer that screamed “MOSS”, Lost Lagoon.

Ayala Moriel Parfums newest perfume, Sunset Beach, is one of those perfumes inspired by beaches that manages to not smell like tanning lotion or the sort of functional fragrances we’d associate with a day at the beach. For the most part, this is a rarity in the perfume world. So many “beach fragrances” rely on the sort of scents used in products, not the beach. Sunset Beach is a creamy, warm scent with woods that is like a never-ending summer.

This is my first time every living in a place with distinct seasons. Labor Day happened and it was like a switch was flipped. After months of hot, humid days, it suddenly became milder. It’s not abusive to go outside. There’s a mild breeze, a warm sunny glow and the tree just out the window is covered in ripe apples. I think it’s safe to say that if a perfume has “hops” as a fragrance note, that it’s going to be weird. Hops themselves smell weird. And if you don’t know that, then plan a visit to a local brewery this weekend or make friends with hobby brewers. People are usually proud of their hops and want you to smell them.
