Opus Oils Spank Natural Perfume Review

Hedy Lamarr

Opus Oils is an indie perfume brand located in Hollywood. If you dig through my archives, you’ll see that I have reviewed quite a few things from the brand. Spank is a perfume in the Fetish Collection. The brand works in mixed media compositions but does offer all-natural compositions as well. Spank is one of the all-natural perfumes.

Spank is animalic. Should that be any surprise with a name like “spank”?! Spank is a natural leather perfume. I admit at first, it’s odd. It’s camphoric/green but sweet. This is going to sound gross, but it comes across a bit like oysters. But, I’m one of those people that loves the smells of oysters, go figure. The sweetness is balsamic (not like cupcakes, but like a balsamic vinegar reduction). As the perfume wears, it becomes smokier. It’s like a smoky leather with something that smells like saliva on skin. The dry-down is softer and creamier. It’s like sandalwood and a nutty oud. My favorite part of the perfume is the base. It’s warm and cozy, almost amber-like but still has some of that oud-y funk. The base basically smells like expensive incense. I really didn’t expect for a perfume that is so leather bar to dry-down to something so calm and meditative. But, it does.

Notes listed include choya loban (Indian frankincense distillation), choya ral (ral tree resin and cedar distillation), Madagascar vanilla, labdanum, viola odorata, vintage patchouli, and oud attar. Launched in 2008. PERFUMER – Kedra Hart

Give Spank a try if you like natural incense or oud perfumes. Or perfumes like Blackbird x Zola Jesus Taiga, Tauer Lonestar Memories, DSH Perfumes Peace, Aftelier Oud Luban and/or Roxana Illuminated Perfumes Impromptu. I feel like to like Spank, you’re going to have to be the sort of person that appreciates perfumes that aren’t traditionally pretty. It’s naturally weird.

I’ve sampled this perfume in an oil format. Projection is below average. It wears like a skin scent. Longevity is average (which is above average for a natural perfume).

Spank comes in a few sizes with the 1 oz EDP retailing for $75 at Opus Oils. Samples are also available for purchase.

Victoria’s Final EauPINIONAnimalic oud and incense smoke. Like its name, I don’t expect for this perfume to appeal to a broad audience. Spank is naturally weird. It’s skanky and animalic which you either love or hate. But, I think it all works together. If you’re looking for a natural perfume that would frequent leather bars, this is one worth sampling.
