More of the 1920’s: Get The Look Of Greta Garbo

This one is a special request for reader, pat. Greta Garbo is such a style icon, a bit of understatement, huh? To get this look:

FACE: Apply concealer where needed. Erno Laszlo Multi-pHase Concealer is nice for the under eye area. Apply a matte finish foundation such as Clarins Truly Matte Foundation with a foundation brush. Blend. Apply a pressed powder to set the foundation. I love Guerlain Les Violettes Pressed Powder even though it is pricey. No blush for this look. I don’t know if I can go through with it! I’m so washed out without blush. I guess you could apply a very, very sheer pink to the apples of the cheeks. Like a light dusting of Everyday Minerals Blush in Soft Touch (not pictured).

EYES: Greta had plucked, thin brows. I love that look and it was so Greta!. Fill in brows with a brow pencil such as Tarte emphasEYES High Definition Brow Pencil, this is a thin and precise brow pencil. Then brush brows into place with the spoolie. I’m all about multi-tasking products. Take your pressed face powder and apply to lids. This even outs the tone and absorbs oil. Apply a medium brown shadow from lash line to crease. I like MAC Eye Shadow in Cork, a warm medium brown. Blend. Take a long-wearing eye liner pencil such as Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Bourbon, a dark brown. Starting from the inner corner of the eye, line the lash line. The line begins to get thicker at the center of the eye. Line the bottom “water line” too. Curl lashes. Apply a few coats of lengthening mascara to top lashes, something like L’Oreal Telescopic Intense Looking Lengthening Mascara in black. Apply a few coats to bottom lashes.

LIPS: Lips are a raspberry shade. Line lips with a rose/pink colored lip liner such as Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liner in Rose. Apply a berry lipstick such as Boots No7 Stay Perfect Lipstick in Raspberry. Top with a juicy raspberry lip gloss such as Bobbi Brown Shimmer Lip Gloss in Raspberry.

Choosing a fragrance for this look isn’t easy. It’s intimidating because it is Greta Garbo. I’m thinking¬†DSH Parfum de Luxe. I can see Greta wearing that.

UPDATE: Post is old so many of these products are no longer available. However, you get the idea.

  1. Yes, DSH owns this era (and a number of others, like the Marie Antoinette 18th Century, tho there’s more competition every day…the more the merrier, I say).

I love Greta. I am not a fan of line eyebrows but otherwise I love her look above all others, it seems perfectly modern to me.

    1. There’s always more room for OTT fragrances. I seem to like “heavy” 20’s-30’s blends.
For some reason, I have always admired thin penciled on eyebrows. The only explanation I can come up with is that it is something I would never do. Because of that it is “bold” and “exotic”. But, it would look terrible. I know this.
