More 1920’s Fashion: Get the Makeup Look of Billie Dove

Photoplay 1929 Billie DoveJanuary 1929 (

I recently got my hair cut in a bob with bangs. I was going for more of a flapper look but it looks more like a 70’s take on the 20’s.  Or better yet early 90’s Industrial fan. This is cool and I’m happy with it. Every fall I seem to get really inspired by the 20’s and 30’s. Living in a rainforest, literally, I wear lots of hats in the fall/winter. I guess this is why I crave these fashion eras. I love this Billie Dove look. I’m in love with that turban! This is how I dress when I “go out”; however, I think this is a great tutorial for a Halloween 20’s flapper type of costume. Here are the colors that I used to achieve this 20’s inspired look:

FACE: Under the eyes I applied Covergirl Simply Ageless Corrector as concealer since it matches my complexion. I applied Lancôme Absolue Foundation with a sponge. I know one shouldn’t use a foundation sponge but that is what works for me with this thick foundation. This foundation gives me a glow that no other can. With a large, fluffy powder brush, I applied Coty AirSpun Loose Face Powder to set the foundation. With a blush brush I applied NARS Blush in Desire, lots of it! (The flash washed most of it out. Trust me. It’s there).

EYES: I can never get those brows, so I just filled my in with Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre Brow Pencil in Natural Blonde and brushed them in place. From lash line to crease I applied with a medium eyeshadow brush, Jane Eye Zing Eyeshadow in Browny Points, a dark warm milk chocolate matte brown. With a liner brush, I applied this shadow to the bottom  lash line as a liner. Under the brows, I applied NYX Single Eye Shadow in Nude, light buttermilk with a satin shimmer, to add some brightness. I curled lashes and applied false lashes. I applied mascara to bottom lashes, Rimmel Volume Flash Mousse Mascara.

LIPS: I applied Covergirl Outlast Smoothwear Lip Liner in Wine. From the tube I applied Wet n Wild Silk Finish Lipstick in 508A or Black Orchid. This is a dark wine lipstick with a faint shimmer. I think it is a great glam fall shade. And it costs about a $1!

For a fragrance I want to top this off with something very glamorous like Kilian Rose Oud EDP.

I love this look. It’s actually really simple because the shadow requires minimal blending and only a few colors are used. With false lashes and all this look takes me about 15 minutes to apply. This is such a fun special occasion look.

    1. Thank you! I’m loving having bangs again. I only feel like myself with them.
Browny Points is a nice shadow, it can be difficult to apply sometimes but it looks awesome in the crease with a shimmery champagne base.
