I really should of trusted Public Enemy when they said “Don’t believe the hype.” When will a beauty addict learn? I think the answer is never. Here’s a little about me: I’m a Taurus. I like seaside picnics. I like to watch The Ghost Whisperer. I collect glassware. And I have thick and super short lashes. Their color is so light that they are almost invisible. I’m looking for a mascara to love and love me back. Any takers?
You see, genetics screwed me. My sisters have lush, thick, dark lashes. And if this wasn’t hurtful enough, I get screwed by cosmetic companies. I have spent so much money on mascara and I still haven’t found a mascara to love! I really don’t want much. If I want dramatic, my sister lashes then I have to wear false lashes. I want a mascara that lengthens, darkens, curls, and adds fullness 🙂 I don’t want too much, right? I really just want my mascara to look like my family’s lashes before they apply mascara. So, really, I’d be happy with darker and longer lashes.
This Maybelline Falses Volum Express Mascara was hyped! Nylon magazine made me believe that the falsies were the push up bra equivalent of mascara. Bloggers raved. Tweets wouldn’t stop. I ran out to buy Maybelline Falsies and the stores were sold out from Walgreens to CVS to Wal-Mart to Target. I spent days hunting for this mascara! So, even though I knew I shouldn’t hype it up, I couldn’t’ help it 🙁 Finally, I found it at Target a week later.
The next day I was very happy to try it. What a mess! The Falsies claim to deposit pigment at the lash bed to make lashes appear fuller. It deposited pigment all over my beautiful eye makeup application. Gross. The brush shape inst’ to my liking and the handle is fat and awkward. For some reason the brush bends as if its soul purpose is to make you make a mess. See that indent on the wand in the product picture above…this causes Maybelline The Falsies to wave its hands in the air like it just don’t care. I apply a coat to one eye, then the other. By the time I’m back for round 2, the formula is dry. Clumps are everywhere. I felt so betrayed.
I’ve learned that the first try with a new mascara isn’t the best. Like a new pair of shoes, you have to break them in. I’ve been wearing this for over a week and my feelings haven’t changed. It’s still messy and clumpy. I don’t like a clumpy mascara look. That’s what makes false lashes wonderful! No clumps. People say you have to take your time applying this and it doesn’t hurt to go through the lashes with a lash brush and then it looks really hot! Well, that is more time than I’m willing to spend. If I was to spend that much time, I’d apply false eyelashes! I can apply false lashes in less than 5 minutes and I know the final result looks better than this Maybelline Falsies mascara.
As you can see from my before and after pictures, this mascara does something. So it isn’t horrible. *Well, really though, look at the pictures. There isn’t much of a difference considering the time I waste applying it. I know the pictures aren’t the best but they aren’t that far off from “real life”.*
If you like fat brushes and clumpy looking volumizing formulas, then you could like this. I don’t mean clumpy in a derogatory way. That look is really liked by some people and you do see it in fashion magazines. You could like this mascara if you are already blessed with beautiful long lashes but want them to look darker and thicker, then this will work for you. I find that the people loving this formula have better lashes than me before they apply the mascara. I’ll use the tube for a couple more weeks and toss it out. I know this isn’t for me and I won’t ever, ever repurchase this. I would say that I have learned a valuable lesson. No, I haven’t. I’ve been writing this blog for over 2 years and you can go back through my editorials and see the same mascara pattern over and over. I’m not going to stop until I find my true love.
I accidentally bought the waterproof formula because that was all that was left. Even with an oil-based remover that takes off theatrical makeup, I had difficulty removing this formula. So, it is long-lasting and I didn’t have any flaking. This type of lasting power can be seen as a positive or a negative.
If you still want to give this a try and I don’t blame you. I can’t learn from mistakes. Because people love this so, I consider this mascara to be a “beauty deal”. Maybelline The Falsies Volum Express Mascara retails for about $7. It is available at most drugstores and Ulta.
