Jazmin Saraï is a new niche Canadian perfume line that inspired by scent and sound. Earlier this year, I wrote a review of Otis & Me, a perfume inspired by Otis Redding’s “Cigarettes and Coffee”. Neon Graffiti is the modern floral out of the quartet that is inspired by M.I.A.’s “Sunshowers”.
Neon Graffiti opens with bitter tomato leaves and grapefruit zest. Cool spices and crisp, garden greens. The heart is a dewy, cool floral. This heart is familiar but I can’t figure out what it reminds me of (sorry). It dries down to a soft, woodsy amber. Neon Graffiti reminds me of a container garden after a warm rain.
Confession, I feel like M.I.A. is one of those artists that I *should* like but I don’t. I’ve tried to make myself like her music, but I can’t. Like I couldn’t even get all the way through “Sunshowers”. And I love female rappers (and queer hip hop), but yeah, there’s something too “pop” about M.I.A. but that’s another story and I’m not a music critic. Anyway, what I’m saying is that I don’t think I like M.I.A. (the music, not the woman) but I get the aesthetic so I feel I can compare it to Jazmin Sarai’s creation.
I don’t really think it has the energy of the sounds of “Sunshowers” or even other M.I.A. songs but I think it has the M.I.A. “production”, the aesthetic. This is such a dumb thing for me to say, but I think Neon Graffiti smells like a pretty woman. It smells like the perfume that a pretty, young, stylish woman would wear. It’s a pretty floral but it’s funky (and still approachable).
Notes listed include bergamot, grapefruit, cardamom, mint, wet ivy accord, jasmine, mimosa, sunflower accord, cedarwood, incense and ambroxan. Launched 2014. PERFUMER – Dana El Masri
Give Neon Graffiti a try if you like modern florals. Or if you like perfumes like Smell Bent Lobster Cellphone, Huitieme Art Aube Pashmina, Annick Goutal Folavril, Diptyque Eau de Lierre and/or Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic. *I also think Juliette Has a Gun wishes that they came up with this fragrance.
Genres: Electronic, Alternative dance, Hip-Hop, World, Grime (damn, I’m old) and R&B.
Projection is average, longevity is above average.
The 1 oz bottle retails for $65 at Jazmin Sarai. Samples are also available for purchase.
Victoria’s Final EauPINION – Tomato leaf floral over amber. For girls that want to look like girls in NYLON.
