Hourglass Cosmetics is a luxurious brand and the new Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick is no exception. I’ve had the opportunity to try the new lipstick line, Femme Rouge, in the shade Nocturnal. This luxury lipstick is actually luxurious.
Formula & Wear: This formula is wonderful! It is a moist formula that actually does live up to its “cushiony feel” and all the other company claims. It contains moisturizing Vitamin E and antioxidants. My lips feel hydrated like I am wearing a balm. The color applies evenly with one coat. It does not feel heavy or like “lipstick”. I am very impressed with this formula. It isn’t the longest wearing, but I’ll trade long-wear for comfortable moisture and true color. I said that it isn’t the longest wearing, but for a formula that is moisturizing and has a satin finish and lots of pigment, this is one of the longest lasting in that “genre” that I have ever worn. (Just check out my pics below). This is also one of the most “comfortable” lipsticks I’ve ever worn. I forget that I’m wearing it. The lipstick has a faint vanilla aroma that reminds me of the vanilla in MAC lipsticks.
Packaging: This isn’t a cheap lipstick. Hourglass Femme Rouge retails for $30. But, the formula AND the packaging is so luxurious. I tell myself that I won’t fall for fancy packaging. But, this metal tube feels expensive and I have fallen. It’s sturdy, it’s heavy. This isn’t your typical drugstore or department store lipstick tube. This tube is tough. It’s metal. This packaging is high-quality and appears very well made. It’s also refillable (haven’t figured that out yet). And have I mentioned that I love the Hourglass logo and font? And their is an hourglass shape engraved on the lipstick. Details are not left out with this Hourglass packaging.
Color: Nocturnal is a medium satin plum lipstick. From the pictures and swatches on-line, Nocturnal looks like a deep merlot (and look at my tube picture above, very “dark” shade). Because of the “gothic” name and the company swatches, I was a bit disappointed when I first saw Nocturnal in the flesh. I expected a more dramatic “night” shade and instead got a very tame, very pretty “day” plum. I guess this is a good thing because I’ll get much more use out of the pretty medium plum. It’s “work friendly” but not a ho-hum mauve or brown. It’s a versatile shade that can be played up for evening or down for running errands. The shade has no shimmer and a classy amount of shine. I really do like the actual shade of Nocturnal, but it isn’t what I expected. That’s why one should never underestimate beauty bloggers and beauty swatchers, right?
Who may like this lipstick? Those that like moisturizing lipsticks with full-coverage. Those that like light-weight feeling lipsticks. Those that don’t mind paying the price for luxury cosmetics. Those that like “heavy-duty” packaing and refillable lipsticks. Those that like a luxurious product.
Who may not like this lipstick? Those that like long-wearing matte lipsticks. (You know the ones that you only apply once or twice during the day). Those that don’t want to pay $30 for a lipstick. And those that don’t want a heavy lipstick tube in their purse.
I’m a lipstick fanatic. I’ve tried so many brands; I own so many brands. I am very impressed with Hourglass Femme Rouge Lipstick. It has everything that I personally look for in a lipstick: even pigment, moisture, and pleasant scent. And the awesome packaging is a bonus. It’s a pricey product. This just means that I’ll purchase in person or really investigate colors online before splurging.
A tube of Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick retails for $30. UPDATE: Product has been discontinued.
