I am a fan of Hourglass Cosmetics. I’m impressed with the line’s formula and color choices. I’m also a fan of lip and cheek stains so I was delighted when Hourglass launched Aura Sheer Lip and Cheek Stain. Each of these products are water-based, easy to blend, and are easy to layer for buildable color. I’m reviewing both of these items in the pretty pink that verges on red in some lights shade, Flush. The shade, Flush, has no shimmer.
a. Aura Sheer Cheek Stain in Flush – The formula of this cheek stain is lightweight and easy to blend. The water-based formula doesn’t dry quickly so it gives you time to blend. The finish is sheer, natural, and dewy. And when I say sheer, very sheer. The color Flush is beautiful for light complexions. It gives a healthy berry flush. I really don’t recommend this color for medium to dark shades unless you want something that you have to layer or can barely notice. This stain wears all day, no budging or fading.
b. Aura Sheer Lip Stain in Flush – The formula of this Lip Stain is lightweight. It dries and sets much more quickly than the Cheek Stain, so blend quickly and apply evenly. The final color is fresh and healthy, not as sheer as the Cheek Stain. If you want something more sheer, wear a lip balm 😉 The formula isn’t moisturizing but it isn’t as drying as all of the other lip stains I have tried in the past. I do wear a balm over this stain because my lips are always dry. And I want SPF. I’m happy with the light berry pink shade. It has blue undertones and gives me the appearance of brighter teeth. It’s pretty and I like to wear it with dewy, minimal makeup and “nautical” inspired fashions. The stain wears longer than most lipsticks but not as long as something like Benetint. But, I’d rather wear this Hourglass over Benetint, much easier to use.
Both products have a sponge tip applicator that “clicks”. You either love or hate these. I twist and apply the Cheek Stain with my finger tips instead of the sponge. I don’t know why. I guess because I end up blending with my fingers anyways. I’m probably contaminating the applicator with my fingers. But, I do wash my hands before applying my makeup. I apply the Lip Stain directly from the tube with the sponge tip applicator and I blend with the sponge.
You can see a “fresh” look that I did above with both products. The colors are sheer and provide a soft pink glow, like being out on the windy shore.
I really love both of these stains and I do recommend them. If I had to choose one product, I’d go for the Cheek Stain. I like the look and it is one of the easiest to use cheek stains that I know of. Since it is long-wearing, I love it for our humid climate. And it’s water based. I will be wearing this from summer to winter. I do love the Lip Stain but like I said, if I had to prioritize, I’d buy the Cheek Stain and use a tinted lip balm on my lips. However, I really do love this lip stain and I’m planning on buying the shade Scarlet. And I’m planning on buying the other two Cheek Stains.
