It’s December 1st and I realize that many folks have the holidays on their mind. Or semesters ending on their mind and other important stuff. But, I’m a perfume person and this snow and freezing temps has me thinking about something delightfully frivolous – perfumes for winter. Here’s my perfume suggestions for Winter 14/15 that pair well with some of my favorite winter activities.
Snow Days
These are scents that either remind me of snow or I think “blend” well with snow.
Serge Lutens Fille en Aiguilles EDP – This spice and evergreens fragrance reminds me of a picturesque mountain chalet surrounded by snow. It’s like being warm and cozy while looking out at snow-covered evergreens. Retails for $140 at Beautyhabit. Full review here.
D.S. & Durga Siberian Snow EDP – This is a powdery, fluffy amber that pairs well with snow. Retails for $98 at Beautyhabit.
Blackbird Triton EDP – This perfume is like incense smoldering in a snowy mountain temple. Retails for $38 at Blackbird. Full review here.
Fireside
These are the perfumes that I think need to be worn while next to the warm glow of a fireplace.
Puredistance M Extrait – This smoky scent reminds me of mezcal and handsome men. And don’t you want both of those by the fireside? Retails for $198 at Luckyscent. Full review here.
Tom Ford Private Blend Tobacco Vanilla EDP – This one reminds me of pipe tobacco and grandma baking sweet, honeyed treats. It’s such a comforting fragrance for me. Retails for $215 at Nordstrom. Full review here.
Cartier Le Baiser du Dragon EDP – I love this spicy floral amber. It’s warm, seductive. This is what you wear when you’re lounging around on a fluffy rug wearing a silk dressing gown in front of the beautiful light of a fireplace. Retails for $145 at Nordstrom.
Gift Giving
These are the festive perfumes that go well with Christmas trees or at least will remind you of a holiday tree.
OLO Fôret Perfume Oil – Smells like crisp, cool evergreens. It’s fresh “Christmas trees”. Retails for $45 at OLO. Full review here.
Burberry Brit EDP – It’s spices, almonds and vanilla. Warm and cozy like a Burberry scarf. It benefits from a little fir 🙂 Retails for $74 at Sephora.
Aramis JHL EDT – This spicy scent is basically a variation of Estee Lauder Cinnabar. But, this one has evergreens, so it reminds me of Christmas trees. Retails for $62 at Nordstrom. Full review here.
Winter Treats
These are the gourmands that remind me of various holiday treats.
Hermès Hermèssence Ambre Narguile EDP – This reminds me of gingerbread and warm apple cider. Retails for $240 at Hermès. Full review here.
Olfactive Studio Lumière Blanche EDP – This one reminds me of spicy horchata and iris marzipan. However, it’s not too foody because of a nice addition of sheer woods. Retails for $145 at Beautyhabit. Full review here.
EnVoyage Perfumes Indigo Vanilla EDP – This indie didn’t really remind me of jazz clubs but I did get sweet and spicy sugar cookies from it. It’s like Christmas cookies and violet. Retails for $65 at EnVoyage Perfumes. Full review here.
Celebrations
Festive, effervescent perfumes to toast to…
Sonoma Scent Studio Champagne de Bois EDP – It’s champagne and sandalwood. Retails for $65 at Sonoma Scent Studio. Full review here.
Etat Libre d’Orange Noel au Balcon EDP – It really is like an orange blossom at a holiday party! It’s an orange blossom with honey and spice. Retails for $80 at Luckyscent. Full review here.
Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere EDP – This is the “softer” version of Chanel No. 5. It’s a powdery, radiant fragrance that is fizzy like champagne. Retails for $98 at Nordstrom.
Date Night Masculines
Winter “date night” fragrances for masculine types…
April Aromatics Bohemian Spice EDP – This is a sweet and spicy patchouli. Retails for $250 at Luckyscent. Full review here.
Tokyomilk Dark Excess EDP – This brand is usually marketed as feminine but this is an earthy patchouli with oak with a blood orange opening. It’s earth and oranges. Retails for $36 at Sephora.
Karl Lagerfeld Classic Lagerfeld EDT – This is like Guerlain Shalimar for gents. Retails for about $25 at Perfume.com. Full review here.
Date Night Feminines
Winter “date night” fragrances for feminine types…
Estee Lauder Private Collection Amber Ylang Ylang EDP – I like white florals in the dead of winter. And this perfume is a great blend of a warm amber and a beautiful ylang. Retails for $150 at Nordstrom.
Scentstory 24 Platinum EDT – I was really close to including this in the “Celebrations” category because this is such a celebration rose to me! This is a really good “cheapie” that reminds me of platinum roses toasting with flutes of French 75. Retails for about $36 at FragranceX.com. Full review here.
aroma M Geisha Noire perfume oil – Geisha Noire is a dense, powdery amber. It’s sultry stuff. Retails for $58 at Luckyscent. Full review here.
So, what will you be wearing this winter? Are there any special perfumes that you wear on the holidays?
this isn’t frivolous- this is LIFE! *laugh* ok, people get very attached to their Farmville crops, so i think we’re safe in our indulgences.
so, i don’t know how i did not make this connection: Lagerfeld Classic = “men’s” Shalimar. *smacking forehead*
this winter i’m more concerned about my face and lack of commitment to skin care. what happened to me? but since you asked i’ll take the April Aromatics, Olo and EnVoyage. do you also validate parking? 😉
The world is a tough and cruel place. We need something like this 🙂
What happened to you?! It happens. Even I get lazy with it. My skin is really “dull” right now.
Haha, that April Aromatics is in my current rotation. I like my patchoulis slightly sweet and spicy. And the Olo is out in my rotation too. Evergreens, just can’t go wrong with those.
Love choosing scents for winter. I’ve been wearing Toyko Milk Excess a lot. Also Penhaligon’s Elixir. The latter is almost medicinal in it’s comforting and calming qualities. Have you tried the new Red Musk from the Body Shop? I’m wondering if it’s any good. I have yet to try it. Sounds like it would be a winter scent.
I’ve been wearing Elixir a lot. It is calming, really like it.
I haven’t yet! I keep meaning to go in a store and try it as it sounds really promising. But, now that it’s closer to Christmas, I’m trying to avoid malls 🙂
Champagne de Bois is one of my go-to Sonoma’s; I don’t even care what the season is.
Oh, mine too!
