EauMG’s September 2017 Empties

September 2017 empties

So, what did I buy this month? I ran out of concealer so I picked up some from MAC. Other than that, I tried to go back to “Low Buy” after my Hungary haul. I also ended up re-ordering some things from The Ordinary. I was doing good and then had a splurge on the last weekend on the month buying an Ormonde Jayne travel set, Mugler Angel Muse and a La Prairie toner. Oh, well.

Here’s my empties for September. Get cozy, because there was a lot of ’em:

September 2017 skincare empties

SKINCARE

I emptied quite a few full-size skincare products. It was great timing to empty my summer skincare in September so I can move on to “fall” skincare. It was a weird month that was hot and humid. I ended up using clay-based masks more than sheet mask.

Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Night Pads Extreme – I saw a few skincare bloggers I like mention these and was skeptical. They seem like Stridex for grown-ups…because they are. Has AHAs and BHAs and a citrus aroma that smells like those gummy orange slice candies. These are amazing for travel. I use them on the face, for in-growns, lumps on the arms/legs.

  • Repurchase? Yes. They were so convenient for travel.

Nooni Sprout Smoothing Toner – This is a Memebox brand (before they decided to basically just be a review aggregator with affiliate links). It’s a perfectly fine toner with acids that has a fresh, clean aroma.

  • Repurchase? Nope. I can’t.

Skin79 Rose Mist Toner – This is a light mist with a light floral fragrance.

  • Purchase? No. I liked it but I like all sorts of stuff like this.

The Face Shop Green Tea Waterful Serum – I wanted something watery for summer with some anti-oxidant properties. This is a watery serum with a strong green tea fragrance. It’s OK. It does great things with The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% in HA.

  • Repurchase? I don’t know. Maybe next summer.

Nature Republic Ginseng Royal Silk Watery Cream – This is a product you’ll love or hate. It’s like a watery gel with an oily feel with gold flakes and a laundry-ish floral aroma. Personaly, I love it. It’s nourishing but not too much for me in the summer. Plus, the packaging feels heavy and luxurious.

  • Repurchase? Maybe (next summer).

Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+ Rose Edition – I love this stuff. Here’s my review.

  • Repurchase? Yes (or at least the upgrade 2017 version). I love these weightless sunscreen.

Nature Republic Fresh Sun Gel SPF 30 – This is a great cheap sunscreen gel. It feels a lot like the Bioré except the SPF is lower and the scent is a sort of obnoxious laundry-ish floral that Nature Republic seems to like to use in its creams.

  • Repurchase? Maybe, if they are having a sale.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment – This is my go-to balm for lips.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

MILK Cooling Water Stick (travel size) – I have no clue what the heck this thing is for. I used it under the eyes. It was incredibly <meh>. This line is just not resonating with me.

  • Purchase? Nope.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Day Cream (travel size) – This was OK and applies just fine under sunscreen (which you’ll need for this “day” cream). I love “marine” ingredients. The fragrance is very fancy French like jasmine and something else that reminds me of another’s brand (but I can’t place it).

  • Purchase? No.

SHEET MASKS:

Mamonde Rose Moisturizing Flower Mask – It’s an OK mask with a faint rose fragrance.

  • Repurchase? Probably not.

Leaders Amino AC-Free Mask – This is one of my favorite masks because it has AHA, BHA and snail secretion filtrate. It’s my holy trinity.

  • Repurchase? Yes! I buy these by the box.

September 2017 fragrance empties

FRAGRANCE
I have a goal to empty a fragrance sample a week. I met my goal and then some! My empties do look like that of a 16 year old girl, but whatever.

Demeter Cologne in Devil’s Food – I guess sometimes I want to smell like a really ignorant box cake mix. Don’t judge me. Or do. I don’t care. Full review.

  • Repurchase? No.

Bath & Body Works Georgia Peach & Sweet Tea Fragrance Mist –  This was a gift because…Georgia. This is not very sophisticated but I was in a peach mood this summer. It smells like ignorant Lipton Peach Iced Black Tea mix. Which is sort of gross; yet, I like it.

  • Repurchase? Probably not, but I enjoyed it while I was using it. It fit my mood.

NEST Candle in Periwinkle Hyacinth (travel size) – I love what NEST does with “purple florals”. This is a watery hyacinth that reminds me of bluebells.

Tom Ford Private Blend Neroli Portofino (sample) – This isn’t an exceptional neroli “eau de cologne” but I like it (I bought a full-size bottle when I was young and stupid and didn’t know any better). Full review.

  • Purchase? I already answered that.

Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Citrus* (sample) – Sweet, sweet cupcake citrus.

  • Purchase? No.

Jacomo Art Collection #08* (sample) – Spicy chai, so good. Full review.

  • Purchase? I wish. It’s a shame these are no longer available. It was a great collection.

Bruno Fazzolari Lampblack* (sample) – This is such a great smoky, inky vetiver that has the right amount of drama. Full review.

  • Purchase? No. but I wish my husband would start wearing it.

Hermés Eau des Merveilles EDT (sample) – I like this radiant amber but it’s what my mom wears. Full review.

  • Purchase? I probably should.

By Kilian Forbidden Games (sample) – I thought these smelled like Pantene when I wrote my review years ago. With time, I realize I was being nice. It smells like knock-off Pantene.

  • Purchase? Gah, no.

September 2017 empties

BATH/BODY

I emptied my “summer” shower gels just in time for fall.

Kneipp Endless Summer Lime & Mint Body Wash – This limited edition product was my favorite shower product of the summer. It has a realistic lime peel and garden mint aroma and is the color of Slimer.

  • Repurchase? Yes, but next summer. I need to move on to fall.

Le Petit Marseillais Shower Cream in Orange Blossom – I’m so happy this brand is now easy to find in the US (but I do think the formulas are different). It’s not really a shower cream, but a shower wash. The fragrance isn’t really orange blossom either. It’s like a neroli water and bitter orange that smells like “baby perfumes”. The scent is really, really subtle and I find that it doesn’t linger on the skin.

  • Repurchase? I may. I really enjoyed it for summer.

Madame Scodioli Elyria Soap – This smells like lavender Earl Grey tea. It’s nice.

  • Repurchase? Probably. I love this brand’s soaps.

Palmolive Naturals Health Radiant in Habba Saouda – This is bodega soap and I use it for my hands. It’s not exciting.

  • Repurchase? No.

Coola Classic Sport SPF 50 in Mango (travel size) – I hate this stuff. It leaves a really greasy residue. It has a strong, weird mango smell. And I don’t like how this company “greenwashes”.

  • Purchase? Nope.

September 2017 hair empties

HAIR

Not much to see here.

VERB Ghost Oil (travel size) – Cool name but not really an accurate name. It’s ‘cone based and feels like one. It did OK on my hair but so does stuff half the price. I usually prefer heavier serums/oils anyway.

  • Repurchase? No.

Briogeo Rosarco Milk Leave-In Conditioning Spray (travel size) – This brand always shows up in subscription boxes. And it has yet to have a product pull me in. This is one of the best I’ve tried from them (which says littler because it’s been a <meh> brand for me). It does what it says it does and has a peachy floral fragrance.

  • Repurchase? Probably not.

September 2017 makeup empties

MAKEUP

For me, I emptied a lot of makeup. Gaze upon my cheap makeup empties:

e.l.f. Oil-Free Maximum Coverage Concealer in Porcelain – Is this the best concealer in the world? No. But, for $3 it’s great. Nice medium coverage and oil-free. With its size and formula, I think it could be used as a foundation too.

  • Repurchase? Maybe. Or I may try another formula from them

Essence Make Me Brow Eyebrow Gel in 02 Browny Brows – This is a decent dupe for Benefit Gimme Brow Volumizing Eyebrow Gel. It’s easy to use and looks natural. This shade is great because there are absolutely no warm undertones. Plus, it’s so cheap.

  • Repurchase? Yes. I like it for my lazy days.

L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise in Waterproof Black – I love this stuff. It’s one of my favorite launches of the year. It actually makes my pitiful lashes not look pitiful. Also, it “ages” well. It didn’t get clumpy or gross after a few weeks of using it. However, I will not buy waterproof in the future because I struggle to get it off.

  • Repurchase? Yes!

Kiko Smart Fusion Lip Pencil in 715 – The shade is a gorgeous medium purple that isn’t that easy to find in a lip liner. The formula isn’t my favorite but I loved the color.

  • Repurchase? Nah. I’ll see if ColourPop has something like this.

Total: 32. 20 full-size. 6 travel/deluxe samples. 6 samples.

What about you? Which products did you empty in September? Did you buy anything new?

  1. Love your monthly columns. I get inspired to use up and clean out. How do you manage to use up so many samples and stick with a regular skin routine?

I loved the travel haul. Fun to see what you can get in other countries. DH and I will be going to Barcelona in a couple of weeks. I know-hubs keeps checking the State Dept travel advisory. But I expect nothing from this administration. (Political rant!!). Looking forward to seeing what the stores hold there.

    1. Thanks for reading!

So, for the most part I stick to my usual and then add in a sample (only one at a time). If there is a problem, I usually blame it, lol. If there isn’t, I assume all is OK. This isn’t perfect because skincare is a lot about how things play together…and some things pull their weight better than others. Anyway, right now I have too many samples and I should give them away and keep the ones I’m genuinely interested in.

Did you go? How was it? I love Barcelona.

Yes, it’s a scary time to travel because it seems like something man-made, political or natural is happening all the time. I think the best way to live in this world is to be cautious but don’t have fear. I hope you guys had a great time.

  2. Wow, you emptied a lot! I had a pretty good month of using things up too:
Andalou 1000 Roses Heavenly Night Cream
    Leaders AC Clear Treatment Mask
Smell Bent Never Never Land mini
    Monsillage Eau de Celeri decant
Hermes Un Jardin Sur Le Toit decant
    Guerlain Attrape Coeur decant
    L’Erbolario Tiare decant
Guerlain Shalimar Ode a la Vanille Sur la Route de Madagascar 2012 decant
    Slumberhouse Jeke sample
    Andrea Maack Coven sample
    Olympic Orchids Woodcut sample
Pecksniff’s Ginger Flower and Patchouli Candle
L’Erbolario Musc EDP bottle (used as room spray)
Pure Copal Incense (no brand named)
Wavertree & London Frangipani and Gardenia luxury soap
    Lush Rose Jam shower gel
Klorane Shampoo with Magnolia Shine for Dull Hair

Lots of perfumes that I really like in that group. Luckily I have more of a few of them. I’m sad I can’t find Jeke anymore, and if I can, it’s for a super unreasonable price. I also loved my W&L bar soap, and check out the packaging for that one. It’s gorgeous. Also, shoutout to another successful Klorane shampoo and my $2.99 Pecksniff’s candle find at TJ Maxx.

I did buy some stuff this month. I heard Lush is adding new perfumes soon and discontinuing some, though I don’t know which other than Lust. So I snatched up a small size of Sikkim Girls, Death and Decay solid, and Plum Rain shower gel while I was at it. Hmm maybe that’s all I bought this month.

I have yet to try Le Petit Marseillais shower stuff, and I thought the Orange Blossom would be my first one but when I sniff it at the store it’s so subtle! Instead I’m thinking I’ll go for the White Peach and Nectarine first. I liked it to a surprising degree. Have you used that one? Also, they’re huge! It will take me forever to use one up.

    1. Oh yeah, how could I forget my best deal! I found Diptyque Baies room spray at Goodwill for $3.99! It smells like L’Ombre dans L’Eau.

    2. You emptied a lot too! For me, I guess it was just the time to empty stuff all at once because I was finally back home and using my stuff regularly.

I’m currently using the Andalou 1000 Roses toner. It smells heavenly. I haven’t used the cream but I’ve used the toner, eye gel and mask.

Do you like Coven? I find that’s one I keep meaning to buy and always forget about. So I guess I don’t want it that badly…idk.

I didn’t realize that LUSH was getting rid of so much 🙁 The new Volume 4 looks like there is some good ones. Has anyone tried Cardamom Coffee?!

It’s super faint. It reminds me of something for a child. For me, it was good because it wouldn’t interfere with my perfume testing (so faint and doesn’t linger). The bottles are HUGE. I have White Peach (hubs bought it). It smells soooo good and is stronger than Orange Blossom. It was weird with Orange Blossom because I bought it when I had bad allergies. I thought I was congested and it was stronger. Nope. It’s how it’s made. I haven’t tried the other varieties but right now White Peach is my favorite. I highly recommend it. I also bought a body cream (Shea Butter), it’s good if you like sweeter scents.

      1. I’m also using the 1000 Roses toner and eye gel right now. This was my third purchase of the night cream. I like it quite a bit except this time it actually turned bad. It smelled rancid, so I had to throw it away. There was not much left, so it wasn’t a big loss. But it was strange.

I do like Coven. I just swapped with someone for 10ml of it. The only thing is that it’s SO strong. It lingers for so long that I do get sick of smelling it. I just need to learn to spray very little.

Just to be clear, I don’t know whether or not Lush is getting rid of SG or D&D. I just wanted to be sure to buy them in case they do become unavailable. I kind of wish I’d bought D&D in liquid rather than solid because the solid is a bit soapy. I’m also considering buying a small size of All Good Things even though I only tried it once. Of course, they were sold out of the small one when I made my purchase. Yet it was back on the website a week later. I really want to try Cardamom Coffee, but I have to mentally prepare myself to go into a Lush store. They give me anxiety.

Yes, my Goodwill is the best!

        1. That is weird, but I guess it can happen. I’m sure there are different batches and how things are handled (how long in store, storage, etc.). I like the eye gel but my only complaint is that I wish the rollerball was metal so it’d feel cool.

OK, I see. I bought a small bottle of Lust this month because I’d be so sad if I could no longer get it (plus it’s cheap). I still have some D&D and SG, so I’ll be OK. I keep hearing great things about Cardamom Coffee. A friend bought a bottle and said he give a sample from his so I can avoid going into the store, lol.
