EauMG’s October 2017 Empties

October 2017 empties

Oh, October…I had a terrible cold that left me feeling awful for weeks and unable to smell anything. I went to LUSH and picked up a bath bomb and the Dirty Springwash in hopes of making my head “open up” some. I also bought a small bottle of Lust because I could smell it. (And I also wonder how long it’ll be around with the launch of the new stuff). I also bought the NARS x Man Ray Noire et Blanche Audacious Lipstick Set. I love the idea of this collection but I’m trying to narrow it down to two purchases: lip set and one eyeshadow palette. I absolutely love the mini lipstick set. There’s a shade named after Lee Miller and everything. I’m so happy I bought it.

I also bought L’Occitane Advent Calendar to count down the days to dumplings and a movie. I have no idea why I bought this so early. I also bought a Darphin Serum because I remember liking it for redness…and winter is coming. I also had to repurchase the La Roche-Posay cleanser mentioned in my list below.

And I bought a Make Up For Ever Palette in X-Large because it was FINALLY in stock. I’ve realized that I mainly just use singles. I love the idea of palettes. I love seeing the relationships between shades. But, it’s like with my eye shape, on ambitious days I’m wearing 2 eyeshadows. Anyway, I decided to put all my MAC and some Lancôme singles I depotted into this palette. I have so much room left. I guess I underestimated the size of “X-Large”.

And here’s what I emptied:

October 2017 skincare empties

SKINCARE

There was a season change so I started using new full-size products (especially after emptying a lot last month). You won’t see that many empties in this category because I’ve started on all new stuff. This was actually a pitiful month for full-size skincare empties.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser – This is one of my favorite cleansers. Gentle and cheap.

  • Repurchase? Yes. I already have.

Phoenix Botanicals Faerie Balm* – It’s a linden blossom lip balm. I like how it actually sticks to my lips and I don’t have to reapply every five seconds.

  • Purchase? Yes. I like it.

Hurraw! Choco-Mint Lip Balm – This was a gift with a purchase. It’s exactly like the name implies. I like their other flavors better.

  • Purchase? No.

Vichy Aqualia Thermal Power Serum (deluxe sample) – You know, not much to see here. I didn’t feel (or see a difference) with this. I wanted to love it but I don’t.

  • Purchase? No.

L’Occitane Shea Comforting Cream Light (sample) – This is a nice texture and a rather basic formula. It does have more fragrance than I like.

  • Purchase? No. But, if I had another sample or something, I’d use it.

Tatcha Pore Perfecting Water Gel (sample) – Sample didn’t have much so I can’t say too much. I see why it’s popular because it’s lightweight and layers nicely. However, it’s expensive and I can probably find something similar from Korean or Japanese brands for much less. It’d be great in summer though.

  • Purchase? No.

Valmont Moisturizing with a Cream (deluxe sample) – If I were rich and my skincare consisted of procedures, I’d be all over the Valmont line. The Swiss now how to nourish my skin.

  • Purchase? I wish.

Sheet Masks:

The Cure Honey Collagen Essence Mask – Sadly, it’s not affiliated with Robert Smith. It smells like honey and was an OK mask.

  • Repurchase? Probably not.

Hey Pinkgo Girl White Yogurt Lifting Lace Mask – This is one of those creepy lace masks. Mostly a novelty and doesn’t really offer anything to my routine.

  • Repurchase? No.

LL Lang Natural Energy Hyaluronic Acid Mask – Super basic.

  • Purchase? No.

Leaders Amino AC-Free Mask – This is my favorite cheap mask ever. I mean, there’s AHA, BHA and snail filtrate. It’s my holy trinity.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

Naisture Red Wine Mask Pack – This is a cheaper mask that smells like grape candy. I was actually surprised by how well it moisturized.

  • Purchase? Yes.

The Face Shop Goji Berry Mask – This is more of a lotion serum mask with a tart fruity fragrance. It’s OK.

  • Repurchase? Nah.

October 2017 perfume empties

FRAGRANCE

My goal is to empty a sample week. I did that and more in October! Whooo!

NEST Votive in Holiday * – This is their classic holiday scent. It’s spicy with evergreens. It’s very “holiday”. Full review.

  • Purchase? I like it but probably not. I actually like their other holiday scents better.

HEM Frankincense Incense – My spouse bought a temple size back of this. I’m going to have HEM Frankincense until the day I die.

  • Repurchase? lolz, no.

Pinrose Pillowtalk Poet * (sample) – This is a powdery white musk. Full review.

  • Purchase? No.

Olfactive Studio Chambre Noire * (sample) – When I first reviewed this, I thought it was like plums and incense. It is. But, I noticed more of the leather in it during these past few wears. Full review.

  • Purchase? No.

April Aromatics Bohemian Spice * (sample) – I love what a doughy, spicy patchouli this is. Full review.

  • Purchase? Actually, April Aromatics was nice enough to gift me a bottle which I’m very grateful for because I love it.

Jo Malone London Wild Bluebell Cologne (sample) – It’s a dewy, grassy floral. It’s OK. But, it’s sooo not me. Full review.

  • Purchase? No.

Tonatto Profumi Magnifico (sample) – It’s a mossy citrus cologne. Full review.

  • Purchase? No.

Aftelier Honey Blossom EDP * (sample) – It’s a pretty honeyed floral. Full review.

  • Purchase? No.

DSH Perfumes Antiu EDT * (sample) – It’s a really interesting evergreen and resins fragrance that reminds me of Christmas.

  • Purchase? No.

Green Tree Vajrayana Buddhist Tantra Incense (2 sticks, sample) – It’s OK. It smells like you know, Indian incense.

  • Purchase? No.

October 2017 bath empties

BATH/BODY

I may have not emptied many full-size skincare products in October, but I did do a pretty good job emptying bath/body products. I’ve wrapped up a lot of my summer favorites and now I’m ready for autumn.

Tree Hut Shea Body Butter in Original Shea – I love this stuff because it’s thick and smells delicious. Plus, it’s cheap.

  • Repurchase? I usually do. I’m sick of it right now but I like it.

Yves Rocher Concentrated Shower Gel in Olive Petitgrain – I’m surprised by how much I like this verdant fragrance. It’s so green. The bottle is small and concentrated which I’m not wild about but I get where they are coming from.

  • Repurchase? Probably.

Malie Organics Beauty Oil in Hibiscus – I really love this multi-purpose oil’s formula. The scent is a pretty hibiscus (a little metallic, a little musky, a lot of floral).

  • Repurchase? Maybe.

Yves Rocher Expert Fermeté 2 in 1 Firming Moisturizer – This is a “toning”, lightweight lotion with a light “fresh” fragrance. Does it tone? Not really. But, it dries quickly and I love that in the summer. I can immediately put on my clothes and/or sweat and not feel like an oil slick.

  • Repurchase? Probably. I like it in summer instead of winter though.

Bath & Body Works Shower Gel in Pretty As a Peach – I was super into peach this summer. This is like a floral peach. Nothing special but it’s pretty.

  • Repurchase? No. I burnt myself out on peaches.

Hermès Eau de Narcisse Bleu Bar Soap – Hermès soaps are superior to all other soaps. They are so fragrant and luxurious and absolutely my favorite soaps in the entire world.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

October 2017 hair empties

HAIR

This was my month to empty hair products!

John Frieda Frizz Ease Flawlessly Straight Shampoo – My hair has been so frizzy now that I’m older. I went back to use the stuff I used the last time my hair was long (high school). My hair loves this sort of ‘cone-y stuff.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Flawlessly Straight Conditioner – See above.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

Ecru Acacia Protein BB Cream (travel size) – My hair seemed to like this. It’s a cream that made it shiny and smooth looking. It does a good job of concealing split ends.

  • Purchase? Maybe. I have so much stuff right now but I do like this.

Beauty Protector Leave-in Conditioner (travel size) – It’s a good detangler but the scent is too sweet for my liking. It’s really, really gourmand.

  • Purchase? No.

Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo (travel size) – Why are all hair products these days so sweet? This a sweet amber (like Cacharel Amor Amor). I hate dry shampoo but used this because A. I have it and B. the humidity was making my hair look oily.

  • Purchase? Nope.

Hask Kalahari Melon Oil Color Treated Hair (packet) – You know, I like the formula but the smell is a fruity melon that smells like a depilatory that I used in high school. I can’t get over that.

  • Repurchase? No.

Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Hair Conditioning Mask (travel size) – Is there anything more frustrating than sitting under a cap and then only to find out that your conditioner did the same thing as a 2 minute wash out one can? UGH.

  • Purchase? No. I actually hate this stuff. It made my hair frizzier and drier.

October makeup empties

MAKEUP

I actually emptied some makeup products and feel pretty darn good about myself. My input is still more than output though.

NYX Vivid Brights Liquid Eyeliner in Vivid Delight – So, I absolutely love this orange shade but the formula isn’t great. It dries down very dry looking and flakes. This also means that the formula itself dries out quickly. So, either I used this all up or it dried out on me. I don’t know. But, I’d love to have some suggestions of an orange liquid/gel liner with a better formula.

  • Repurchase? No.

Skin Food Peach Sake BB Cream in Sand Beige – This was my complexion product of the summer. I love its texture and subtle matte finish. Plus, it actually matched my complexion pretty darn well.

  • Repurchase? Probably next summer because it’s too dry for me in the winter.

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray (travel size) – I like this much more than the NYX “dupe”. It does set the makeup without drying the heck out of my skin.

  • Purchase? If I will buy something to see makeup, I’ll buy this. I totally get why it has a cult-following.

Alima Pure Satin Matte Eyeshadow in Bramble (deluxe sample) – This is a matte, cool-toned taupe (slightly darker than it looks on their website). I highly recommend this shade for anyone as pale as me with light eyes (or hooded eyes). It’s matte and really makes my eyes stand out.

  • Repurchase? Probably. However, I probably have something like this and don’t know it. Because I have problems.

Everyday Minerals Luminizing Sunlight Finishing Powder (sample) – I’m trying my best to use up these little samples that I have. This is a good setting powder for those that don’t want to look flat. It does have gold shimmer. Review here.

Total: 41. 20 full-size. 10 travel/deluxe sample. 11 samples.

This sounds like a lot of empties, but it was mostly just samples and sheet masks. But, I did empty more bath/body and hair stuff than usual.

My goal going into the end of the year is to empty all those stupid hair minis that come in subscription boxes. I also want to empty all those little mineral eyeshadow samples that I have. I also need to de-clutter the collection. I just need to get my shit together. I feel really disorganized…in well, everything. I should at least tackle something like this, something I have some control over.

What about you? Which products did you empty in October? Did you buy anything new?

  1. I give you permission to get rid of stuff without emptying it. You can give it away, have a friend help you finish it, or even throw it away if you really don’t like it. Life’s too short to use products you don’t like, especially when you have a cabinet full of stuff.

I’m on my own plan for finishing perfume decants and samples, with at least one gone every week. I report in on Facebook. Slow and steady but it’s working. But I really won’t wear perfume that I hate, so I either give that away or if there’s only a tiny bit left, I toss it. This week I’m finding I really don’t like Chinatown anymore, and as there is only about 1.5 mls left, I’m trying to decide whether or not to toss it or not.

    1. I don’t know what my problem is. I always remind myself that life is too short to use products you don’t care about. Because it is. And it’s a shame to use things you don’t like when you have stuff you do like. I have a malfunction and it’s deeper than what I thought it was. Like I don’t know if it is about waste or feeling guilt (childhood of poverty) or what. But, there’s something there that I need to confront because I know it’s silly to use things you don’t like.

Soooo…I’m actually in the process of putting the stuff I don’t love all together to give away. Either send it to my sisters, give it away to friends and the unused stuff to a shelter. It’ll be good to start the year off fresh.

I also went through samples/decants and have a little jewelry box full of those that are almost empty to use up quickly (before they go bad, evaporate, etc). I predict that November will be one heck of a Project Perfume Empty post.

      1. I’m glad to hear you’re going to give away some stuff! And giving unused to a shelter is an awesome solution. Also, it’s good you’re going through the samples/decants to find which are almost empty. A lot of them do evaporate quickly so it’s good to give them a good wear before it’s too late! I have to have some fun wearing perfume I love so I’m just plodding along with finishing off one or two samples/decants a week. After several months, I’m feeling really good about reducing my decant stash.

I look forward to your Project Perfume Empty post.

  2. My October empties:
Acure Brightening Facial Scrub deluxe sample
Dermal Rose Collagen Essence Sheet Mask
Dermal Wine Collagen Essence Sheet Mask
Dermal Bee Venom Collagen Essence Sheet Mask
Mineral Fusion Mineral SPF 40 Moisturizer
    Lush Coalface soap sample
    Dior Eau Noire decant
    Guerlain Oriental Brulant decant
    Bond No. 9 Chinatown sample
    Caron Farnesiana extrait sample
    Diptyque Eau de Lavande decant
    Amouage Fate Woman decant
Serge Lutens Bois et Fruits decant
    Parfums Delrae Panache decant
    Olympic Orchids Olympic Amber decant
    Soivohle Honeysuckle Bird mini
Miller et Bertaux Green, Green, Green and Green decant
Voluspa Champaca Bloom and Fern candle
DW Home Warm Tobacco Pipe candle
    DW Home Neroli Mandarin candle
Annick Goutal Myrrhe Ardente shower gel travel size
    Serial Soapers Lavender soap

Ok, skincare… I hated the Lush Coalface soap and didn’t even use it all up. It was irritating the shit out of my skin and making it burn. I’m also done buying the Acure scrub. It also irritated my skin and gave me some redness. The Dermal masks have been hit or miss. I’m bad at recording which of them I like. I bought a lot of them on Amazon and still have a bunch. My skin is mad at the weather changing, so I’ve been trying to pay attention to it more lately.

I used up some really great perfume samples and decants. In fact, I’ve already replaced Fate with a larger decant and a bottle of MeB Green is high on my list. I miss my Eau Noire sample and am sad that the decant I have had for a long time and am ready to give away or swap doesn’t smell nearly as good as the sample. I hate inconsistent perfume batches.

Voluspa C&B candle smelled like an everything and the kitchen sink late 80s-early 90s perfume. Pretty fun. AG Myrrhe Ardente shower gel was my least fave of the Orientaliste line, though I haven’t gotten my hands on any Amber Fetiche. Do they even make a sg of that one? And Serial Soapers are two ladies I work with. They actually made a really good soap! Too bad I have a bar soap buying problem and like variety.

Bought in October: that decant of Fate, a LAFCO shower gel and a soap, a lot more candles at TJ Maxx, and moisturizer. Oh, and a couple replacement L’Oreal lipsticks of ones I’ve almost finished.

    1. That was a good round of decants/samples! This month (Nov), I’ve already knocked out some great samples for my Operation Perfume Empties.

With face masks, I’ve made an Evernote of ones that I like. I know that sounds lame but I can’t keep up. So the ones that I’m 100% going to repurchase, I put in that doc.

I had that Voluspa candle! I loved it. It was really fun and over the top. I like their formulas too. Those DW ones are awesome too. I love that tobacco one that is basically Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille.

Lalala, can’t hear you! I don’t need to know about any soaps. I have a problem!

Curious about which LAFCO you picked up. They have a store here that I can’t resist (also with Santa Maria Novella). I can’t go by there without buying soap.

Oh, from the other comment…this month I used up a travel size of Phyto Intense Hydration Shampoo and my hair loved it. I have no clue how it managed to moisturize but also leave my long, heavy hair with volume.

      1. I got LAFCO Honeysuckle & Bergamot Revitalizing Liquid Wash and Daffodil Soap. They just arrived yesterday, and the shower gel leaked some. :(. But it smells amazing ! Probably one of the best honeysuckle variations I’ve smelled. I probably won’t use it until spring or summer, but I can’t wait.

  3. Jeez, I’m verbose. I wanted to respond to your empties too, plus that NARS lipstick set has great colors. I saw that Lush launched all their new Gorilla perfumes and packaging online today. They didn’t seem to get rid of any old ones after all, but they are offering 30ml and 100ml sizes only now. So hmm.

I’m going to buy some of that Faerie lip balm, maybe a variety set of three actually. It comes with Rose and mint also, I think. I’ve been wanting to try a different brand for lip balm. You used up some perfumes that I really like – Bohemian Spice, Honey Blossom, and Chambre Noire.

That YR shower gel sounds up my alley. And I need an Hermes soap in my life. But they’re $$$ and I am starting to qualify as a soap hoarder AND have my eye on a bunch of Nesti Dante soap that Beautyhabit has on sale. In addition to a perfume problem, I have a soap and shower gel problem. Oh, and candles and incense…

I think the John Frieda shampoo and conditioner would be good for my hair too. It’s thick, straight, and long and has been a little more frizzy lately. How’s the scent?

    1. I want the other NARS set that is exclusive to Nordstrom. Do I need it? Heck no, but it’s just sooo pretty.

I bought Lust because well, I’d be mad if I couldn’t. Plus, it’s cheap.

They’re good balms. I also like this fir balm she does. It smells like a forest and it’s great for cuticles this time of year.

UGH, don’t get me started. I have a serious bath product problem. I MUST STOP. I have a huge backlog of stuff and it’s all stuff I love. I really shouldn’t buy anything for a long time.

So, it’s not a noticeable scent once hair dries. It’s that “generic clean”, like Pantene or something. So, it’s not anything spectacular but it also doesn’t bother me. I use their serum too which is unscented.
