EauMG’s October 2016 Empties

October 2016 Empties

Bye, October.

Here’s the damage I did in October. I bought like $40 of stuff at a Harlem hair supply store. I also bought too much Colourpop because I was on the hunt for the perfect terracotta lipstick. And I found it with Mama .But, I wish more than anything it wasn’t a liquid lip formula. Those are so drying and I’m over them. Why do they keep making all the cool colors in these inferior formulas?!

I had this weird pumpkin spice craving and made a Bath and Body Works order. I bought the scents unsniffed (online) and they smell nothing like the note list or like the reviews described. So, I ended up making a Haus of Gloi order too. The Haus of Gloi was even sweeter than Bath and Body Works’ so I give up. I don’t get why brands can’t make something that smells like spice. They all want to overdose on the amber or cupcake accords.

Let me warn you. October was a boring month for Empties. The season has changed and so has my skincare. I’ve started using new stuff (as you can see from my September haul). It’s also boring for Empties because I’m trying to use up things that need to be used up. In my opinion, this was the most boring month for Empties ever.

October 2016 Empties

I apologize for how boring these are. It’s a lot of stuff I don’t like and then using up samples of stuff that I have in full-size.

LUSH Mint Julips Lip Scrub – I have no clue why I keep buying mint products when I hate mint products. But, I like mint juleps. Overall, this is a basic natural lip scrub. I like the formula.

  • Repurchase? No. I don’t like mint but I like the formula so I may try another flavor. I know I could totally DIY these. But, I’m lazy.

Nature Republic Real Nature Honey Ampoule – I could really write a lengthy review of this stuff but nothing said would be very nice. It does moisturize. But, it’s sticky af. Like sooooo sticky. It leaves my skin impossibly shiny which I love but for real, lint will stick to your face. I’m certain putting actual honey on your face would be less sticky than this. It smells like the honey note in Prada Candy Florale.

  • Repurchase? No. Unless I want to buy a bottle to use as a highlighter for dewiness. I love the effect but the feel of this stuff is too much.

LLang On the Skin Truffle from France Sheet Mask – I have no clue why I’d believe that truffle would do anything for skin. This is a lotion-based (actually shea butter), thicker cotton sheet mask with some decent, basic ingredients. It smells perfume-y. Overall, it’s probably best for dry skin. It helped my skin recover after I went AHA crazy the night before.

  • Repurchase? It was a $1 so it’s totally possible that I will.

Leaders Too Much Fun in the Sun Sheet Mask – I totally get why Leaders is one of the most popular sheet mask brands in South Korea…they’re superior. Even their regular ‘ole sheet masks are better than average. I used this one in Mexico and loved it. My skin breathed a sigh of relief when I wore it.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

The Face Shop Real Nature Rice Sheet Mask – Just like I realized that Leaders is superior, I think I finally realized that The Face Shop‘s sheet masks are inferior. They have great products but their sheet masks are lacking in formula. The cotton isn’t luxurious. The serum is liquid-y like water. It smells like alcohol because it has too much alcohol in it. And it leaves a sticky film on the skin. I’ve tried much better in this price range.

  • Repurchase? No.

Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Eye-Opening Serum (deluxe sample) – I thought this lightweight eye serum with subtle shimmer could be a good replacement for Andalou Luminous Eye Serum, but it’s not. I noticed no difference in appearance or feel with this product. However, it’s unscented which is a big deal when it comes to Kiehl’s products.

  • Purchase? No.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye Cream (deluxe sample) – Rant awaiting…this product claims to be fragrance free which it is. However, it’s packed with potentially eye irritating essential oils like lavender and jasmine. It smells strongly of lavender so it was demoted to a cuticle cream. And it even made my cuticles dry until they cracked. No way I’d put this near my eyes.

  • Purchase? No way.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50 Tinted Fluid Sunscreen (sample) – I love this weightless sunscreen. It’s a new HG for me.

  • Purchase? Yes. I actually bought a full-size because of this sample.

Nature Republic Ginseng Royal Silk Watery Cream (deluxe sample) – I love this stuff. I actually have the full-size but used the GWP travel-size when I traveled.

  • Purchase? Already have.

Glyderm Gentle Face Cleanser (travel size) – Once you start caring about pH in your cleansers, you realize that other people don’t. There aren’t many pH balanced cleansers out there. This non-foaming cleanser is. It makes a huge difference on my skin as far as acne is concerned.

  • Purchase? I already did.

October 2016 Empties

My new and hopefully achievable goal is to use up all these almost empty samples I have around. I have all of these beautiful perfumes and I’m not wearing them. WHY?!

Botanicus Fig Room Spray – It’s an aquatic fig room spray that I’ve had forever. I’m a hoarder and I should be ashamed.

  • Repurchase? No.

Ramon Bejar Deep Amber EDP (store sample) – This smells so good but sadly I can’t buy every amber that I like. Review here.

  • Purchase? No. I’m too poor.

Juliette Has a Gun Midnight Oud EDP (store sample) – This is one of my favorites from the brand. Review here.

  • Purchase? I actually purchased a full-size bottle of this. Why I’m using the sample instead? I don’t know.

DSH Perfumes Pretty & Pink EDP (manufacturer’s sample) – This smells differently than I remember. I always thought it smelled like a fruity shisa. It still does but these days I notice the cozy musk base more. Full review.

  • Purchase? No. I like it but I’m in no position to buy everything that I like.

October 16 EMpties

Really a collection of very boring products except for the Hermès soap.

Neutrogena Dry Touch Ultra-Sheer Sunscreen SPF SPF 45 – I like that this stuff actually is dry and doesn’t transfer. It’s not luxurious but it gets the job done.

  • Repurchase? Yes. I keep coming back around to this one as a daily body sunscreen.

Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash – This is so boring but sometimes it’s good to use an unscented body wash.

  • Repurchase? Maybe. A cheap unscented body wash isn’t that easy to find.

Hermès Bar Soap in Eau de Narcisse Bleu – And sometimes you want something highly fragrant like Hermès. I love this soap. It’s so luxurious.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

Nivea Irresistibly Smooth Body Cream – So, so meh.

  • Repurchase? No.

Steamcream Multi-Purpose Cream– I totally forget I had this. Review here.

  • Purchase? Probably not.

October 2016 Empties

It takes me forever to use up hair products.

FAR Botanicals Verde Oil in Rose Rapture (deluxe sample) – My hair loves Verde Oil so much and I love the rose aroma. Full review.

  • Purchase? I plan on it.

October 2016 empties

I feel like I sure use up a lot of powder for someone that claims they don’t use powder.

Golden Rose Compact Foundation in 05 Soft Beige – I use this as a setting powder with a brush. It does the job.

  • Repurchase? Probably not. It’s Turkish and not so easy to find in the US anyway. It’s just like any other drugstore powder foundation.

NARS Pro-Prime Primer with SPF 30 (sample) – I used this under the Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer. I love it. It feels good. It smells good. And I love that it has full-spectrum SPF.

  • Purchase? If I wasn’t too lazy and actually used primers, I would.

Total: 22. 12 full-size. 5 travel/deluxe size. 5 samples

If my skin keeps being good, I’m set for skincare for the next few months. My goal is to use up all this stuff I’ve been hoarding and not buy anything EXCEPT for the essentials that I use. I’ll buy those during the November sales. After that, mark my words, folks, I’m going on a serious beauty no-buy.

What about you? Which products did you empty in October? Did you buy anything new?

  1. I bought CP Mama too, but I thought it would be a satin liquid instead of an ultra matte. I prefer Bite Amuse Bouche in Maple, which I think is slightly more red. It’s pretty close to NARS Golshan.

    1. I’m so over the ultra matte stuff. It does my lips no favors. The color is so pretty and I’ve been putting an oil on top of it (which reduces its wear time but makes my lips look less raggedy).

I swatched Maple, which is really pretty but it leans more read than I wanted. I still like the color and their formula. I’ll probably eventually end up with it…

  2. Thanks for the mention of the Anthelios. La Roche Posay is easy to find here, but I didn’t realize they have a tinted mineral sunscreen.

Your endless love of sheet masks is nudging me closer to the Korean market. :-)p

    1. I didn’t realize there was a tinted until I saw an article this past summer. I made an order for the body sunscreen and they included this sample. I love it. My complaint with the original was the white residue. This one blends in with my skin. It’s so lightweight.

You should try one. Or two. Or ten 🙂

  3. I had a super light empties month in October. It seems to be in waves because this month I already have emptied things at a faster rate. Here’s the list:
    Formulary 55 Madame Mysterio soap
    House of Matriarch Midnight sample
Pacifica Bali Lime Papaya shower gel
Tonymoly Pureness 100% Pearl Brightening Mask Sheet
    Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue decant

The Pacifica shower gel was quite an accomplishment because I feel like I was using it forever. It was 17oz, which I’ve realized is way too big for me to buy shower gel in. I get so bored with it because it takes so long to use it up. In fact, I took about a year break from using this one. It’s also a good reminder not to buy product at TJ Maxx from brands you don’t see there often just because it is cheap so a “good deal.”

I will need to replace the Prada decant because the Absolue is my favorite concentration of Id’I. Also, had another successful soap experience with Formulary 55. I have one more bar of theirs, but I’m sure I’ll buy more in the future. However, I had a bit of a ridiculous moment this weekend and bought 3 Wavertree & London soaps at a local shop and may or may not have been influenced by the beautiful packaging. Aaand I had already bought one there the previous weekend, so that is 4 bar soaps in a short span of time. So I guess no plans to buy from Formulary anytime soon.

Hey, doesn’t it feel great to finish those perfume samples?

    1. Same for me! This stuff runs on cycles like that.

Huge shower gels – I’m absolutely not a fan even if they are a better value. It takes me FOREVER to use them and I get so bored of them. I get to a point where I have no joy from them and my bath ritual is my “me” time. I want to enjoy it. I have two in the shower now that I’m soooo sick of.

Decants/Samples – It does feel good! So, I’ve put out a few that are almost empty (and that I like) and use them every night. So far, I’ve emptied a lot of perfume samples in November. I need to stop hoarding things I enjoy and use them.

Soaps – You sound like me. I go through phases where I’ll buy 4 bars at a time and then I’m set. I do have a lot of brands that I do like and Formulary 55 is one of them. I haven’t ordered from them in a long time (because I’m overstocked on bar soap right now). I’m also such a sucker for packaging.

  4. More like “mid-October thru mid-November empties”, but I used up my last Leaders mask (sob! wail!), several samples of various things I brought with me to try while traveling, none of which were all that great, but I find that trial sizes of that Fresh Soy face cleanser don’t make my mug too sad when I am away from home and my superior face washes. Most disappointing I think, was a sample of REN redness serum that I actually got three weeks of use of it–even using every single day–and it didn’t do a dang thing.

    I’m super intrigued by that Nature Republic watery silk cream and I so had to run and place an order…and can you believe that is my first beauty related purchase in, like, 3+ weeks? I don’t count the two perfumes I had to buy while traveling (I *had* to! I actually forgot to pack perfume!) At Blackmail Boutique in Austin I picked up Unknown Pleasures from Kerosene…which is maybe the sweetest thing I have ever smelled, and yet I somehow still love it, as well as, The Black from the sum…which is a perfect foil to Unknown Pleasures because it’s pretty austere. It reminds me of one of the CdG incenses but somehow less heavy (and none of them are all that heavy to begin with). I weirdly adore both of these scents. recently posted..Currently {11.21.16}

    1. Leaders are the best masks imho. They had 50% during Black Friday but I passed. I need to use up all my subpar masks before buying better ones.

I have a sample of that Fresh face wash but haven’t used it yet. I have been using their rose mask and really like it.

Life is too short for ineffective skincare products.

I hope you like the Nature Republic. I like it. When I buy in store, they give me the sample hookup. Being that’s like the most expensive item there, you leave with 15% of the store with every Watery Silk Cream purchase.

Oh, I need to try it. I always forget about Kerosene mainly because I’m never in stores that carry it. I’m pretty sure it’s somewhere to be found in NYC.
