EauMG’s March 2015 Empties

EauMG March Empties

March was one of the busiest months that I’ve had in many, many years. I’m going to take a break from unpacking and get my March Empties post together. I’ll give you a full update in my “Favorites” post, but I thought I’d let you know that we’ve officially moved. We have an address in New Jersey now. David started work and seems to like the new company a lot. I hang around this drafty, empty place trying to figure out what we need to repurchase, unpack and apply to jobs.

Being that March was insanely hectic, I only bought Chanel Misia (which was love at first sniff). It’s in a box somewhere waiting to be unpacked…like everything else.

This was a weird month because I actually ran out of a ton of product. It was that time of the year, I guess. I also used up a few samples since I lived out of a suitcase for a few weeks. I threw out a ton of outdated product and gave away gently (and some never used) items to my cosmetic-loving sisters.

Here’s what I used up in March:

March Empties

Ziaja Rose Butter Night Cream – This is a good cream for normal skin. I’d compare this range to Nuxe Rose Petals except this line is much cheaper. I need more moisture than this.

  • Repurchase? Not this product but I will purchase more from this line.

Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser – This rose-scented product will last for such a long time. It does a great job of removing makeup and I usually follow up with a foaming cleanser. Personally, I love this product but I’m not going to recommend it to most skin types since well, it’s a cold cream. It can be “too much” for many skin types.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

Skinfood Egg White Pore Foam Cleanser – I’m not the biggest fan of foaming cleansers but I love this one. This Korean cleanser is really thick and foamy. The fragrance is light and floral (no worries, it doesn’t smell like eggs!). It leaves my skin feeling clean but not tight.

  • Repurchase? Yes. And that is saying something because the packaging is fugly.

Innisfree It’s Real Shea Butter Sheet Mask – This is one of the lotion sheet masks. It’s shea butter based and very nourishing for dry skin. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone with oily/combo skin, but for dry skin, it’s a nice treat. The scent is sort of powdery.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

Epielle Facial Essence Mask in Cucumber – I had mentioned these in a past Empties. Like I said last time, I wasn’t wild about the fit and feel of these. They just do not feel as good as other sheet masks, yet, they get lots of positive attention online. The scent is fresh cucumber (which I really like).

  • Repurchase?

Epic Blend More Moisture Lip Balm in Green Apple – Does the job but smells like a green appletini and I don’t know about that. Full review.

  • Purchase? No. Not a fan of this flavor, but to each their own.

Valmont Nature Moisturizing with a Mask (sample, not pictured) – Valmont is a line of expensive Swiss skincare and this is the first product of theirs that I’ve ever tried. And dang it, it’s actually good. This is a moisturizing cream mask that really soothed my chapped skin.

  • Purchase? I like it but I don’t think I’ll buy it. I do recommend it if you have dry skin and regularly use masks.

Colbert MD Nutrify & Protect Day Lotion (sample, not pictured) – I really liked how this feels but this day lotion has no sunscreen.

  • Purchase? I don’t know. I didn’t really have enough in the sample to make a great decision at this price point. (I do love the night cream).

Summary – It was that time where I used up all my cleansing products. Don’t worry. I’m stocked with cleansers because of my Hong Kong Haul.

Sir Elton John's Holiday Candle

Nest Sir Elton John’s Holiday Candle – It’s a juicy evergreen scent that I could burn all year long. It’s fresh, plus I like the purple vessel. Full review.

  • Purchase? Maybe. I really like it.

Indult Reve En Cuir EDP (decant, not pictured) – This is one of those that didn’t impress me too much when I first tried it (and reviewed it). However, it really grew on me. In this cold weather, it was deeper, darker and well, more badass than I remember it.

  • Purchase? No. But, I like it much better now than I did before.

Summary – This was the most scent-free month that I’ve had since I can remember. It was all packed up. It’s still packed up. BTW – So far, no causalities have been found.

March Empties

Bath & Body

Spectrum Organic Coconut Oil – I started to use this for shaving and I really like it for that. It moisturizes and prevents razor burn for the most part. No scent. Simple. Multi-purpose.

  • Repurchase? Yes. Plus, a jar lasts a very long time.

Nivea Soft Moisturizing Cream – I know lots of people like this formula but it’s not moisturizing enough for me. I prefer the original formula, but maybe this would provide enough moisture in warmer weather…

  • Repurchase? No.

Providence Perfume Co. Hand Cream in Chai Cocoa – This spicy gourmand scent is AMAZING. The hand cream is lightweight and non-greasy. Full review here.

  • Purchase? Maybe not the hand cream because I tend to like unscented hand creams but boy, I love this fragrance.

Paula’s Choice Anti-Aging Hand Cream with SPF 30 – I ran out of every hand cream that I have stashed away this month. Start using SPF hand cream now, no matter your age. I actually rather like this hand cream’s texture even though it leaves a “sheen”.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

Zakia’s Moroccan Black Soap in Original – Black soap is awesome and you need to know this if you don’t already know. Throughout my life I’ve used many different brands and stuff that people’s moms or grandmas would whip up. I bought this and I really like it. Cleanses well and moisturizes. Scent free too. It’s wonderful.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

The Face Shop Rose Water Daily Perfume Hand Cream (not pictured) – I love roses and this Korean hand cream smells like rosewater. It’s a light cream that isn’t sticky or greasy.

  • Repurchase? Maybe. There are other rose hand creams that I want to try first.

Acure Lemongrass & Moroccan Argan Oil Firming Body Lotion – First off, I’m surprised by how chypre-y this smells. There’s lemongrass, lavender and oakmoss. This layers amazingly well under classic Guerlains like Mitsouko. I didn’t notice any firming but it’s a good lotion for daily use.

  • Repurchase? Probably.

Paula’s Choice Resist Retinol Body Lotion – I really like this lotion because it works. However, there isn’t a lot of product in the container so I go through it really quickly.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

Alpha Hydrox Foot & Problem Area Cream – This is my HG foot cream. It has 12% AHA and it makes my feet (and elbows) as smooth as they can possibly get.

  • Repurchase? Yes. It’s my HG!

Ziaja Goat’s Milk Hand Cream (sample) – I have no idea why I love the smell of this collection so much, but I do. It’s like Estee Lauder White Linen meets classic Ivory bar soap. This cream is lightweight, good for “day” use.

  • Purchase? I may.

Summary – OK, so I had too many opened and half-finished products around. My goal in the new place is to use it all up before opening another. I don’t like that clutter. So, what happened in March was that I focused on finally using up those products that were less than half full. Another thing, my hands are thirsty. I used up all of my hand cream stashes.

March hair empties

Natural Essentials Strengthening Dry Oil – I really like this brand of haircare products. This is a smoothing serum with a light citrus-y aroma. Full review.

  • Purchase? No. I like this product but the other dry oil is better for my thick hair.

Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Shampoo & Conditioner – I’ll summarize both of these together since I used both of them up this past month. I love how this shampoo and conditioner makes my hair feel. I have course, thick hair and these two products make my hair feel so soft. The scent is a rather strong vanilla, like vanilla extract and it does linger in my hair until I wash it next. I love this line for my hair.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

Summary – I actually used up shampoos and conditioners. And I actually need to buy some more.

March makeup empties

Bonne Bell Blend N Glow in Natural Blush – This is pretty much a Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick dupe. I’ve went through many of these in my lifetime. But, I guess now Bonne Bell is defunct so I won’t be buying any more…

  • Repurchase? Nope.

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder in Sandstorm – This does what it claims to do – mattify. Which sadly doesn’t really work with my skin type (dry). But, it does provide matte coverage. I ended up using it to set under eye concealer.

  • Repurchase? No. But, it’s worth trying if you have oily or normal skin.

NYX Lush Lashes in Stacked – I wasn’t impressed with this mascara at all. Really all it did was darken my existing lashes. It didn’t add volume or length. But, I will say that it was clump-free as advertised.

  • Repurchase? No.

NYX Big & Loud Lash Primer – On my lashes, this was a total bust. It does absolutely nothing except make my mascara flake. It also keeps my lashes from holding a curl. I hate to say it but for me, this was terrible. I threw it out after 3 weeks of use. I stopped using it and my lashes looked fuller, longer and more curled. It was the worse eyelash primer that I’ve ever used (of course results will vary).

  • Repurchase? Hell no.

MAC Fluidline in Waveline – I’m going to count this as an empty since I used over half of it and then it dried out. The color is a navy blue with shimmer. Yep, I have worn shimmery blue eyeliner, go figure.

  • Repurchase? No. I like Bobbi Brown’s blues better. And why can’t they make these sort of products in “half” sizes so they don’t dry out?

Clinique Long Last Glosswear in Mystic (GWP size) – It’s a thicker lip gloss which means it does last longer. 8 hours? No. The shade is a sheer, cool purple. It’s actually really pretty with my pale complexion. I’ve been all about plums and purples this past year.

  • Purchase? No. I like it but omfg you guys, I have too many lip products.

Jordana Lipliner in Toast (not pictured) – It’s a light warm brown that goes well with other warm shades. Cheap and good. See it here. It reminds me of MAC Lip Pencil in Cork.

  • Repurchase? Like it but I have so much makeup.

Revlon Colorstay Whipped Foundation in 240 Natural Beige – I love how this foundation makes my skin look like a mannequin…so flawless and fake looking, lol. Full coverage, nice finish. However, I bought the wrong dang color and this one is a little too pink for me. I have had to mix it with a Paula’s Choice foundation.

  • Repurchase? Yes but not in this color.

Prescriptives Site Unseen Concealer Level 2 Warm – Remember how awesome Prescriptives was? Well, I do and managed to get a lot of their stock. A year ago I needed a concealer and bought this because A. I remember loving it when I was in my early 20’s and B. it has SPF. Well, I learned that if something worked for you 10 years ago, it probably won’t work for you now 😉

  • Repurchase? No because A. I don’t think it’s made anymore and B. I need more coverage these days.

Summary – I ran out of my cosmetic staples all at once. And if you pay attention to my Empties, I rarely have these many makeup products emptied. But, I guess March is my month for that. But, don’t worry about me, I have plenty of makeup. Too much, in fact.

Total: 32. 27 full-size, 2 travel/deluxe, 3 samples

Since I moved, I went through everything.I threw some things out. I gave other stuff to my sisters. And guess what? I still have too much stuff.

What about you? Which products did you use up in March? Did you purchase anything in March? Did you throw out anything?

  1. That’s a lot of product to use up. Good for you. I bought the Nivea soft and it isn’t as moisturizing, but I’m hoping it will be good for summer? I used up all of my Boscia BB cream, my gloMinerals loose powder. I threw away 4 mascaras that claimed to be waterproof that were not. I guess I back to expensive mascaras. I am buying the Boscia BB cream and the gloMinerals powder again. I’m trying a sunscreen gel from Japan and using my Elta on my arms. My face is really oily for some weird reason.

    1. I have too much stuff. I’m trying to simplify and not have like 50 half-used things around.
Nivea Soft – I think it may be nice in summer. My skin has been sooo dry that this didn’t cut it.
Boscia – That’s one of those brands that I often forget about but don’t know why. They make great products.
Sunscreen gel – I have one of those that I’m using too. It’s Biore.

My skin is freaking out for no reason. Face goes from oily to dry and vice versa in a day. Body is sooo dry. And then summer is going to happen and who knows what my skin will be like then…

  2. Congratulations on the move! A moving blessing: may your things make it through safely and may your unpacking be swift and painless. 🙂

I… didn’t really use up much of anything in March except for some skincare samples from Arcona. Their Magic Dry Ice moisturizer is a great evening face cream for me. I completely overhauled my skincare routine early this year and I’m so glad I did, it’s made a huge difference. I also caved and bought one of the Jo Malone LEs this year, Birch and Black Pepper, which I actually really like. The ink accord in it is really strong on me, which suits me just fine.

At the risk of sounding creepy I thought of you today because I am wearing lilac perfume. I hope you are enjoying life on the East Coast so far!

    1. Moving sucks. But, every single day it starts to look more and more like a home instead of a crash pad.

Arcona is awesome. They have a lot of good products.

What? There is an ink note? Now I’m curious.

Haha, not creepy at all. I love lilacs. I bought this Korean hand cream for the kitty packaging and it actually smells like lilacs. I’m trying to find out if they make a body spray or perfume in the same scent!

    1. Why are they always so low? I guess they’re getting better but it does seem that the higher SPF is easier to find elsewhere. It actually surprises me how much stuff in the US is only SPF 15.
