EauMG’s January 2015 Empties

January 2015 Empties

Well, the first month of 2015 is officially over! I hope it went well for you guys. It went well for me.

This month I spent a week in Hong Kong. This resulted in me buying a ton of cosmetics and skincare. Like a ton (I’ll post a haul tomorrow). And this also resulted in me using up some travel-sizes and samples. I really should go into no-buy mode until the spring.

January Empties

Danahan EcoPure Essential Apple Juice Sheet Mask – This is a really liquidy mask, so much liquid that sheet ripped. It smells like acetone-y apples. It’s meant to exfoilate. I didn’t notice any real difference after using.

  • Repurchase? No. I don’t like faux apple aroma.

3W Clinic Fresh Pomegranate Sheet Mask – This is a cheapie brand of Korean masks that I really like. The serum is thick and moisturizing. This formula has a pomegranate-white tea aroma. This is more of an anti-oxidant, clearing mask. Huge emphasis on makes you look “clean” but I think I look clean anyway 🙂

  • Repurcahse? Yes. I like this brand and the price is really cheap. I liked this scent and it left my skin feeling smooth.

Tony Moly I’m Real Red Wine Sheet Mask – I bought a ton of these while in Hong Kong. This one is for shrinking pores. It smells like red grape juice and I like how it leaves my skin feeling so soft.

  • Repurchase? Already did.

Ziaja Marine Algae Deep Moisturizing Cream (sample) – This is a lightweight yet moisturizing face cream that has algae from Oregon but is a Polish brand 🙂 This is not greasy or sticky.

  • Purchase? I really like how this did in Hong Kong’s humidity so I think I may pick up a full-size in the summer.

Lioele V-Line Waterdrop Sleeping Pack (sample, not pictured)- This is one of those Korean “sleeping masks”. I got a sample with a purchase. It’s lightweight, gel-like and non-sticky. I applied it over serum and a lighter night moisturizer.

  • Purchase? Probably not since it’s not really for my skin type. I’d recommend it to those with oily/younger complexions.

January Empties

Aura Candle in Bubbly – I love the Aura candle line. Bubbly smells like champagne. Full review.

  • Repurchase? Yes. There aren’t many candle scents that I would repurchase but this is one of them. It’s a fun home fragrance. And cheaper than the Jonathan Adler one.

DSH Perfumes White Lilac EDP (sample) – I wanted a nice reminder of better weather. This sheer lilac and white musk does that. Full review.

  • Purchase? I like it but probably not. I’m still searching for a perfect lilac since Phaedon discontinued theirs.

January Empties

Bath & Body

Whipped Goods Whipped Body Butter in Egyptian Musk– I love whipped shea butters, so much so that I should try to make them myself. This indie brand makes whipped shea with other great natural oils. This is a good “night” treatment for skin and I wake up so smooth, even in the dead of winter. The scent is more like shea butter with a faint “red musk” that layers nicely under musks and ambers.

  • Repurchase? I like the product but I won’t repurchase this scent. I bought 4 oz jars of a few scents and I like the other ones better. This one is not bad, it’s just that I like the others better.

Bee & Flower Soap in Rose – I was feeling nostalgic and picked this up. It’s “hard” soap with a soapy rose aroma. And something that I’ve been buying on and off again for as long as I can remember.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

Cutex Original Nail Polish Remover – I didn’t know which category to put this in and I admit it is a rather “unglam” item to report as an empty. But, I’ve always wondered if nail polish removers matter. Like, are the more expensive ones better? I’d love it if you more experienced nail polish folks would chime in.

  • Repurchase? I guess so. Or at least until you tell me otherwise.

Lulah Body Lotion in Fig Magnolia – It takes me way too long to use scented body lotions mainly because I like to go scent-free when I test new fragrances. This has a tart magnolia fragrance. Full review here. They now offer a rollerball perfume in this fragrance.

  • Purchase? No. When it comes to my “day time” body lotion, I need to go scentless. At night I sometimes use scented body butters.

Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-Aging Body Lotion – In 2014, I started focusing on anti-aging skincare for the entire body. I like this moisturizing yet lightweight formula but I really wish it was scent-free.

  • Repurchase? Maybe but I see myself repurchasing scent-free body lotions instead.

Noble Isle Shower Gel in MYNWY Valley Fireside (deluxe sample, not pictured) – The hotel we stayed at had complimentary Noble Isle toiletries which was awesome since this is a line that I’ve purchased from Barneys before. I love this woodsy, peppery fragrance so much. If you like stuff like Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb or CdG Wonderwood, then you’ll love this too. It also comes in a candle and I want that.

  • Purchase? Yes.

Noble Isle Shower Gel in Summer Rising Cornish Hedgerows (deluxe sample, not pictured) – This is a light citrus floral with elderflower liquor. I don’t like it as well as the Fireside one but it’s nice.

  • Purchase? No.

Noble Isle Body Lotion in MYNWY Valley Fireside (deluxe sample, not pictured)- Smells like smoky woods and peppery. Really good.

  • Purchase? No but I want the shower gel.

Haus of Gloi Emulsifying Scrub in Tobac (mini jar, not pictured) – I love the formula but I wasn’t wild about this limited edition autumn fragrance. It’s like a really sweet pipe tobacco with a lot of cedar. This sounds good but it’s really, really sweet. I do like it in this format more than the giant tub of body butter I bought in this scent…

  • Repurchase? No.

January Empties

Renpure Originals Coconut Cream Nourishing Shampoo – I often get in my head that I like coconut shampoos. And I do but I get so tired of the scents by the time the bottle is almost empty. This was cheap and pretty good at smoothing the hair.

  • Repurchase? Maybe. I like it but I’m such a shampoo flirt.

John Frieda Frizz-Ease Smooth Start Shampoo and Conditioner (sample) – Hong Kong is crazy humid and while I was there I heat styled my hair as well (this doesn’t help my hair with frizzies). I used the shampoo and conditioner. My hair was frizzy but I imagine it would have been even more so if I didn’t use this.

  • Purchase? Probably not. I did like it but I like so many hair products.

John Frieda Frizz-Ease Extra Strength Hair Serum (sample) – It’s been years since I’ve used this stuff because I was sidetracked by “anti-cones movement” and hair oils. And OMG, I forgot that I like this stuff and that it works on my course, straight hair. It makes my hair look great with minimum effort.

  • Purchase? Yes.

Noble Isle Perry Pear Shampoo & Conditioner (deluxe samples, not pictured) – I don’t care how luxurious a shampoo is but it if is has an apple/pear aroma, I’m going to think it smells cheap…even if it isn’t. It smells good but nothing outstanding. Does the job but I think I need more moisture.

  • Purchase? No.

Lancome Blush Subtil

Lancôme Blush Subtil Sheer in Sheer Café au Lait (mine was the old packaging, not pictured above) – Wow. I used up a blush. Well, sort of it. It started to crumble and wasn’t worth the mess but it was mostly used up. This is a sheer peachy tan with no shimmer that works best on really light complexions. It’s been discontinued and is lighter than Cedar Rose pictured above.

  • Repurchase? No. It’s been discontinued. But, no worries. L’Oreal True Match has something very much like it for much, much cheaper.

Total: 23 – 11 full-size, 6 travel/deluxe samples, 6 samples

What about you? Which products did you use up in January? Did you purchase anything in January? Did you throw out anything?

    1. Not yet. It’s on my list of things to-try. One of these days lilacs will be in bloom and life will be good.

  1. Oh, I used Ziaja products all the time growing up. My parents are Polish and Ziaja is one of those brands that are still quite affordable after being imported to the US. I don’t have any in my lineup right now, but I know my mom does. 🙂

My only empties this month were perfume samples and Hada Labo gokujyun lotion. I repurchased the Hada Labo, bought my first Lush product ever (Rose Jam shower gel- this blog was part of what convinced me) and after draining samples, bought FBs of my first two Serge Lutens perfumes: Jeux de Peau and A La Nuit. I’m running out of some skincare and shampoo all at once so February may be a big shopping month.

    1. A Polish friend convinced me to order from Ziaja US and they were nice enough to send me samples of the entire line with my order! So far, I’m really impressed because the products are really affordable. I’m currently using the Rose line which I would compare to Nuxe Paris (Nirvanesque).

Congrats on your first Serge Lutens! I remember my first SLs so vividly 😉 I’m using that Hada Labo lotion too. I like it.

I usually run out of everything all at the same time. Feb. is going to be one of those months where I run out of my skincare staples and probably hair stuff.

  2. Bee & Flower soap! I love that stuff, it’s one of the few things I can count on to not bother my skin in the winter. My BFF sent me a care package of the soaps in Rose, Sandalwood and Jasmine recently, and I’m loving the nostalgic smell and my skin is loving it still. I think we discovered it when we were 14 or so, AKA when we had to fight dinosaurs to get the the store to pick it up.

    1. I had to walk 3 miles up the side of a volcano, knee deep in molten rock, fighting off dinosaurs, tectonic plates shifting underneath my bare feet, to pick up bars of sandalwood soap from the store 😉

Oh, us old folks! I love all three scents. I went for Rose because I go through this “rose phase” this time of the year. I think it’s my “omg, I’m so sick of dreary weather” stage. I also really like Chandrika soap. It smells great too.

  3. I’d like to chime in about polish removers. I used to be like you and think it didn’t really matter until I tried Zoya’s remove. It takes polish off so much easier than the drugstore ones and doesn’t even smell like polish remover. I do still find that it dries out cuticles, but my husband even likes me to use this stuff just to avoid the acetone scent. I don’t know how they can make it so effective without the smell, but it’s amazing. The other part is that the dispenser is so good. It’s worth trying and then if you don’t think it’s amazing, you can always refill the dispenser with cheap remover.

Zoya often has really great coupon codes where you can get it for a discounted price, but I never buy the cheap stuff anymore.

    1. Thank you! Like I said, I’ve only bought the cheapie stuff because I’m ignorant. And I thought like with anything else in this world, you can spend more money but it doesn’t necessarily mean it is better. Some people just seem to like to pay more for stuff, lol.

I’m going to try this. I like the Zoya polishes that I’ve bought (and yeah discount codes!). My cuticles get super dry but it’s the smell. If I do my nails around my husband, like when watching a movie or something, you’d think I sprayed pepper spray in the room with the way he acts, lol. I’m so fascinated by a non-stinky nail polish remover.

  4. I am book marking this page because the Whipped Goods sounds really good. My mouth is practically watering just thinking about it but I will have to wait 2 weeks til payday. Also waiting til payday to repurchase this month’s empty NUDE Perfect Cleanse Nourishing Cleansing oil (I love all kinds of oils too!).

    1. I like what I’ve tried from the brand. Really I just love anything oil-based and shea is awesome for my skin in general.

Ooh, that sounds so good! I just checked my email and aroma M will be making a cleansing oil. I’m pretty excited by that!

  5. I just L O V E your empties posts Victoria! Always look forward to them! My empties so far as I can remember are Clinique anti blemish solutions clinical clearing gel and Elizabeth Arden eight hour cream sun defence for face and Lux soap. I don’t think I would repurchase any of those again but who knows!

    1. If anything these help me remember what I like/don’t like!

I love bar soaps and Lux are one of those hard to find brands here. When I see them, I pick them up because they are special to me 🙂 Oh, the power of “exclusivity”, lol.
