EauMG’s April 2017 Empties

EauMG's April 2017 Empties

April flew on by. I was sick with the flu, lost in projects and just dealing with annoyances left and right. I did have some fun which led to a Low-Buy Relapse (again).

I relapsed in March with my Low-Buy so I made it more of a goal in April. This wasn’t easy. My friend was in town for an EXO concert¹ (and my slightly early birthday celebration). We went to all the k-beauty stores and they were filled with temptations.  I bought a Mamonde Rose Water Toner (because I actually needed a toner). Then I went to Nature Republic and they had stuff (that I actually use) marked down to $2-$3. I spent $50 and it was this major haul and I left with so much EXO (*cough* Kai and Chanyeol) swag. Then I bought myself an early b-day present because I can’t resist lipstick minis – the new Sephora Favorites Give Me Some Nude.

So, yeah, I failed again. Better luck next month. Anyway, here’s what I emptied in April:

EauMG Skincare Empties

It was a month of running out of the boring basics and using sheet masks inspired by food.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Toner – This unscented, mild toner is ultra basic but that is why I like it. It’s sort of thick and sticky which is actually something I like in my toner/essence.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

GlyDerm Gentle Face Cleanser – This low pH cleanser is boring af but I love it.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

It’s Skin Power 10 Formula LI Effector – This is a super basic licorice serum. I use it when my fussy is fussy and when I’ve overdone the acids.  After using it, I do think my skin is more soothed (AKA less red).

  • Repurchase? Yes. It’s cheap.

Lilikoi Living Bamboo Buff Exfoliating Facial Wash – I use chemical exfoliants daily so this is too much for me. I don’t really like physical exfoliants so it took me forever to use this up. Mini review here.

  • Purchase? No.

Siam SEAS Mekha Cleansing Balm (travel size) – This very turmeric-y natural cleansing balm has really grown on me. Initially I found the scent overwhelming but then I’m like, it’s turmeric. This is a superfood for my face. I love how my skin after I use this (double-cleansing method). Mini review here.

  • Purchase? I’m considering it.

Leaders Coconut Superfood Gel Sheet Mask in Broccoli I only bought this because for some reason broccoli seems absurd to put on my face but snail slime doesn’t. Anyway, Leaders masks are my favorites. I’m not wild about gel masks but I like theirs. This is a good brightening mask with some moisture.

  • Repurchase? Probably. But, to be honest, all of these in the Superfood line seem to perform the same.

Skinfood Superfoods Yogurt Sheet Mask – This is a super cheap mask. It’s decent for the price but not luxurious (cotton is thick). The lotion is OK for moisture.

  • Repurchase? I can do better but it’s cheap!

Mamonde Safflower Moist Lifting Sheet Mask – There’s a weird camphoric scent with this one and it was sticky…which is weird because none of the others in this range are like this.

  • Repurchase? No.

Deoproce Bright Anti-Oxidant Soothing Sheet Mask – Talk about cheap. This is like 50 cents with some decent ingredients. Fit is a bit off for me and it’s a little sticky, but I’ll put up with that at this low price point.

  • Repurchase? I probably don’t need to but whatever.

Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti-Aging Daily Serum (travel size) – I have loved every variation of this stuff since its launch, but never owned a full-size bottle because I’m poor.

  • Purchase? I wish.

Tarte Tartegaurd SPF 30 (travel size) – This is a natural-based sunscreen. The strong “aquatic” fragrance isn’t too natural smelling, nor is the super glossy finish it leaves. It’s merely OK. I didn’t have any negative reaction to it or anything. It’s just that in this price range, I’ve used better.

  • Purchase? No.

Valmont Prime Contour Cream (deluxe sample) – I like a lot of Valmont products but this eye cream was just OK. It’s thick and the fragrance can be too much.

  • Purchase? No.

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum (sample) – I can’t really remember much about this other than it is scentless and feels smooth.

  • Purchase? Probably not, not enough info from this sample. Feels nice but that’s all I know.

EauMG's Fragrance Empties

My goal has been to use up one perfume sample a week. I seemed to be stuck on naturals in April.

Votivo Candle in Pink Mimosa – This is a bright, cheery berry citrus that really is like Sunday brunch in wax form. Review here.

  • Purchase? I actually already bought a back up of this one.

Juniper Ridge Room Spray in Steep Ravine – Look at this OG bottle! Now that I live in the city, I appreciate these natural PNW rainforest scents so much more. Review here.

  • Purchase? Probably. I’m so prissy that this is as close to nature that I get these days.

Aftelier Vanilla Smoke EDP (sample) – I forgot just how good this smoky amber is! It’s so good. Review here.

  • Purchase? I wish.

April Aromatics Jasmina EDP (sample) – This fragrance actually got even better with age. The ylang-ylang is more prominent in the “mature” version. This stuff is jasmine ylang-ylang bliss. Review here.

  • Purchase? I wish I had enough money to buy full-size bottles of all these bougie naturals that I like.

DSH Perfumes Fire Opal 2014 EDP (sample) – Spicy orange. Think of this as a winter “eau de cologne” or a citrus that wears boxing gloves.

  • Purchase? No, but I like it.

Hermès Hermèssence Ambre Narguile EDP (sample) – Gingerbread and hot apple cider done in that sheer Hermès style. Review here.

  • Purchase? I actually bought a travel spray of this.

EauMG's Bath & Body Empties

It was spring and I was finally emptying the pumpkin spice crap from November that I never, ever should have purchased to begin with. What the hell was I thinking?!

Bath & Body Works Pumpkin Latte & Marshmallow Shower Gel – WHY DID I BUY THIS?! Anyway, out of all the pumpkin stuff I bought, this was the best (pitiful, huh?). It’s like sweet but has this weird tart “cream cheese frosting” thing going on. Not much pumpkin, no lattes and no spice.

  • Repurchase? No.

Aftelier Ylang-Ylang Face Elixir – This has been discontinued and I’ve had the bottle for longer than I should admit. However, it smells so good. It feels so good. I ended up using it as the most luxurious cuticle oil ever. Review here.

  • Purchase? No.

Body Drench Tahitian Monoi Dry Oil – This sounds much more exciting than it is. It smells like pineapples (not manoï!).

  • Purchase? No. It was a GWP. I was happy I didn’t pay for it in the first place (mainly because of the disappointing fragrance).

Tree Hut Bare Moisturizing Shave Oil – This isn’t as good as this brand’s now discontinued shaving cream, but it’s good. It’s not an oil but a gel. This is good because it’s not messy. It does give a close shave with no irritation. Smell is sort of <meh> but it works so well that I don’t complain.

  • Repurchase? Yes.

Madame Scodioli Bath Soap in Laudanum – This smells like spiced pipe tobacco and woods. It’s not your typical soapy-clean fragrance, but that’s why I like it.

  • Repurchase? Maybe.

Haus of Gloi Whipped Soap in Pumpkin Eater – This is a super sweet vanilla spice that verges too much into holiday candle territory for me. However, I love the whipped soap formula so much (for shaving) so I used it up instead of throwing it out.

  • Repurchase? Nope.

Haus of Gloi Pumpkin Butter in Pumpkin Eater (travel size) – Guys, never let me buy pumpkin stuff again. This one is super sweet. It’s like someone hid some black tea leaves inside a vat of vanilla frosting. The formula itself is amazing but I can’t with this scent.

  • Repurchase? Gah, no.

EauMG April 2017 Hair Empties

Look at me using up conditioners! I’m also making it a goal to use up all these little bottles of hair products that beauty subscription services plague me with.

Matrix Oil Wonders Volume Rose Conditioner for Fine Hair – This product isn’t for my hair type but it smells so good that I keep using it. I use this and the shampoo weekly almost like a “deep cleanse” for my coarse hair. It does provide volume like it says! I can’t use it every wash or my hair gets too dry (but that’s a me thing, not an Oil Wonders thing).

  • Repurchase? Probably. I just love how it smells and it does do what it says it does.

Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine Hair Smoothie – I like this formula but the fragrance is STRONG. This sweet vanilla will compete with all your perfumes. I like the fragrance but I’m not always in the mood to have vanilla sillage from my head.

  • Repurchase? I don’t know. There are so many good deep treatments on the market.

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Conditioner (travel size) – This stuff sure has a cult-following so I had extremely high hopes. My hair is coarse, dry, straight and tangles. This was OK. There are leave-in conditioners that I prefer more. It’s not bad but it didn’t rock my world. I think this one must be better for fine hair?

  • Repurchase? No. But, if I get anther freebie, I’ll use it up.

FAR Botanicals Verde Oil in Lavender Absolute (travel size) – I love this formula. As far as lavender goes, this is a really good lavender fragrance. Review here.

  • Purchase? Yes. Maybe not this fragrance but I love this formula.

Eva NYC Get Glossed Hair Serum (travel size) – It’s a thicker serum that is like an oil hybrid. It’s probably too much for fine hair but my hair liked it. It has a sweet amber fragrance that sometimes I love; other times I hate it.

  • Purchase? No.

April 2017 Makeup Empties

Totally random, un-essential makeup empties. I was sick so I didn’t wear makeup that much in April.

Absolute NY Beauty Mark Stamp in Star Mark – I am tacky and have been buying these sort of things since the 90’s (whenever they come in trend). I love a mouche. I usually freehand but stamps are so easy. This one dried out too fast and costs more than most. So, it sucks.

  • Repurchase? No.

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer in Alaska (sample)- I actually use this in a darker shade and love it. I use this stuff a few times a week. I was really surprised to see how similar this shade looks to the other one once blended out.

  • Purchase? Probably.

Total: 33. 19 full-size. 7 travel/deluxe sample. 7 samples.

¹For those with a maturity level higher than mine, EXO is a hella popular South Korean-Chinese boy band that endorses k-beauty brand, Nature Republic.

*Nordstrom, Amazon, Elizabeth Arden, Sephora, Beautyhabit, Target are affiliate links. Thanks!

  1. I am so glad that your blog is back up! I have missed reading your reviews. I am really interested in trying the Madame Scodioli Laudanum soap and the Aftelier Vanilla Smoke sounds like something I would like.

Look at all those decant and perfume samples!!! You are really burning through those. My goal is to empty 4 samples a month…so far I’m not meeting that goal because I keep wearing things from full-size bottles. What did you think of Youth Dew Amber Nude? It’s one of my favorite perfumes (mainly for the memories but it’s really good too).

I was just talking about how good the Olay Complete Day is for the money. Also their anti-aging night is legit. I’ve decided that I need to use it for a hand cream/treatment.

Incense – It’s my incense season. I love burning it and having the windows open. I always associate those headshop-y scents with summer 🙂

      1. I’ve had major problems with decants evaporating, so it’s kinda forced my hand into using them up quickly. Plus I have so gd many. They’re out of control. I’m trying to use up one sample and one decant per week.

I just bought a bottle of Amber Nude on ebay as I was finishing up that decant. I love it! I don’t have a lot of perfume like it, but I think Amouage Fate Woman is similar in style.

Olay Complete Day is pretty decent. I bought a 2 pack of bottles for a good price on Amazon, so I’ll need a break from it after I use up my current bottle.

So I inherited a massive amount from my boyfriend’s mom about a year and a half ago when she moved into an apartment in someone’s house who asked that she not use scented products. Personally, I find that mildly insane and would never agree to it. But because of that, I have enough incense to last about 5 years. She’s totally a hoarder.

        1. Same for me. They do evaporate. My goal is go through at least a sample a week. I don’t own many decants (a few from friends) but I should make it a priority to use one of those a month before they disappear from evaporation.

I do like Fate. I don’t any Amouage, but if I were to add one, it’d be Fate Woman.

I get tired of skincare. I’ll use it and eventually repurchase. I just like to use different things.

Maybe it’ll be good for her if she has hoarding tendencies. Or maybe she’ll just start hoarding something new and unscented. I couldn’t do this but if I could find something convenient and a good value, I’d be tempted…and that’s coming from me!

  4. It may just be my old ass iPad, who knows. I wrote another long comment yesterday morning before work and had the same server error message. In fact, I had it again just now but hit the back button and clicked comment again. I’ll have to post my thoughts on my empties and yours later. :). I’m just glad I got the post to go through now.
