EauMG’s 2014 July Empties

July 2014 Empties

Can you believe it’s already August? They say when you get older that time flies…this is true. These months are starting to feel so blurry.

I didn’t empty as many products in July as I did in June. That’s because I didn’t have so many half empty products around. I started on my “new old stock” which I have more of than I thought. I’m such a cosmetics hoarder.

I’m still in a no-buy until September. I’m doing really well. I ran out of facial cleanser and shampoo and bought both of those. I’ve been tempted by so many summer sales but I’ve refrained. I’m proud of myself.

July Empties Skincare

SKINCARE

Innisfree It’s Real Cucumber Mask – It’s been 10 years since I’ve tried sheet masks (used to love Shiseido’s but they were too expensive for me at the time and I cut them out of my routine). Sheet masks are super popular now so I thought I’d try a few new-to-me brands. This Korean mask has a glycerin like feeling and a faint “clean” scent. It was a 90+ degree day, no a/c. I put this in the fridge and then on my face. That felt great.

  • Repurchase? Maybe. I bought one of each of these and I’m seeing if there is one that I prefer over this one.

Innisfree It’s Real Gold Kiwi Mask – This is another serum-based sheet mask with a light Golden Delicious apple-ish aroma. It’s for dull skin.

  • Repurchase? Maybe. I *did* feel like my skin looked brighter.

Innisfree It’s Real Tea Tree Mask – I hate tea tree oil so I was scared to use this serum sheet mask. But, one thing I’ve learned about Japanese and Korean skincare is that the scents aren’t really like American and European products. This does not smell like tea tree oil at all (huge bonus in my opinion). It smells like green tea soap, very light. Tea tree oil wrecks my skin, this one didn’t. It’s for “troubled” skin, so I thought I use during our heatwave.

  • Repurchase? No. I don’t have problem skin so it’s not really for me. It wasn’t bad but I liked the others better.

Innisfree It’s Real Pomegranate Mask – The texture of this one was very watery. It moisturized and had a very faint floral fragrance.

  • Repurchase? I didn’t love it. I didn’t dislike it. So, I guess that’s a no?

I will have a proper review of these Innisfree Masks up once I try them all. I will say that I’ve really enjoyed adding them to my weekly routine.

July Perfume Empties

FRAGRANCES

Diptyque Philosykos EDT (manufacturer’s sample) – I actually have a large bottle of this fig fragrance but a nice SA gave me a few samples for travel. And I used this up while traveling.

  • Purchase? Yes, I own a bottle.

DSH Perfumes Ma Plus Belle Histoire d’Amour EDP (brand’s sample) – This is a really pretty honeyed floral. Full review.

  • Purchase? No. But, it’s a really good linden.

Guerlain Jicky Vintage 1950’s EDT (1 ml sample from The Perfume Court – no image) – OMG. This is so darn good. Why is it when I think of lavender perfumes that I always forget Jicky?!

  • Purchase? Yes. But, I’m not a vintage hunter. I may just order another sample.

Aura Bloom Candle – It’s tuberose with a little bit of incense. Sultry scent. I prefer burning it in the winter but I have too many “low” candles around.

  • Repurchase? Yes, technically. However, I have other candles that I would like to try first.

July Empties

BODY & BATH

Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Body Wash – This is a great body wash. The scent is more floral (like honeysuckle) than “frankincense and myrrh” but it’s still really good. I’ve been delighted from everything that I’ve ever bought from Shea Moisture and Nubian Heritage.

  • Repurchase? Yep.

Hacı Şakir Lavanta Soap – This is a cheap lavender soap that I picked up in Turkey because we ran out while we there. The bar is huge and lasted forever.

  • Repurchase? I’m not going to go out of my way but I may pick up a bar out of nostalgia (it’s even available at markets in Seattle).

Brut Shave Cream – I usually shave with coconut oil but I had this weird craving for shave cream – like old school shaving foam. So, I bought this classic fougere.

  • Repurchase? Probably, yes. Because sometimes I just want something old school like this.

Phoenix Botanicals Pine & Fir Butter – A natural shea butter based cream with a light evergreen scent. Full review here.

  • Purchase? Yes. My skin loves shea and this made a great hand cream for me since I like the light scent.

Nature's Gate Persimmon Shampoo

HAIR

Nature’s Gate Persimmon and Rose Geranium Color Protecting Shampoo – This is like a volumizing shampoo with a tart rose geranium fragrance. It’s fine for my hair but I want to move on and try something different. I repurchased and now I’m super tired of it.

  • Repurchase? No. It’s not Nature’s Gate. It’s me.

July Makeup Empties

MAKEUP

Essence I Love Extreme Volume Mascara – It’s cheaper than $5 and it’s “Made in Italy”. This mascara is an absolute bargain. If you like drier mascara formulas, try this. I’ve really loved this one, so much better than Diorshow or any of those other “gigantic brush” mascaras. The brush is huge though and I usually like wetter mascara formulas but I liked this one.

  • Repurchase? Yes. Absolutely amazing beauty buy.

Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Eyeshadow in Beach Sand –  I bought this because I like dual-phase shadows and Chanel discontinued theirs. This is a pretty sheer bronze that is gorgeous especially for summer. And then I spilled half of it on the counter. Oh, well.

  • Repurchase? I think so. I like the color and sheer, lightweight formula. The formula isn’t perfect but I do like the wash of color for a “summery” look.

Empties total for July: 15 total. 12 full-size, 0 deluxe/travel size, 3 samples. And 4 of those 12 full-size were one time use items.

My prediction for August is that I’ll have more empties than I did in July since I’m already low on a few items. After doing this for a few months, I realize that I use a lot of stuff. I’m not even going to add up how many different products I use in a day. I think the number would shock me.

What about you? Which products did you use up in July? Did you purchase anything in July? Did you throw out anything?

  1. I really love Jicky right now. I used up two big bottles of sunscreen and my deep conditioner. I think the heat is drying out my hair. I had to switch to waterproof mascara, so I had to buy a mascara, nothing special.

    1. I’m all about some Jicky right now too. I’ve never wore it in the summer before…and it works.

My hair is so dry right now and I had a “duh” moment a few weeks ago – sun. So I’ve been using olive oil and putting in a serum with UV protection after I wash my hair. It’s helping but my hair is still dry. I really need to buy a rich conditioning treatment.

      1. It is super basic but I’ve rebought Aussie 3 Minute Miracle many times…for $3 you really feel like you are getting your money’s worth.

        1. It’s a good product. However, I’m mad at the new smell. I remember it used to be like a jasmine and now it’s coconut, right?

  2. I’ve been working on emptying a set of Bliss travel hair/skin products my brother got me ages ago. It really was a sweet gift, because at the time I traveled a LOT and they came in a zip bag so you didn’t need a separate ziplock for the airport. Unfortunately, it turned out that my skin hates Bliss. The face cleanser and moisturizer not only made me break out, they made my skin inflamed and extra sensitive, too. Woe is me! I shoved the set in the bottom of a drawer and didn’t notice it again until I moved last month. I tossed all the skin stuff in the trash, but kept the shampoo/conditioner to use up. The shampoo is gone, the conditioner nearly so. It’s not the best for my hair, either, but I have oily, resilient hair so basically anything is functional. Rebuy? Definitely not!

I also used up one of LUSH’s solid shampoo bars in juniper and my bottle of Blooming Dream’s Blackbird Vert. My husband finished his bottle of Desert Man by L’Aromatica, which smells amazing on him. I’m just about finished with an old bottle of Bath and Body Works Eucalyptus Spearmint lotion, which is a nice summer scent but I don’t think they sell it anymore. (Also, I have an embarrassing amount of lotion that just needs to get used, so I won’t be buying lotion for a while.)

As for purchases, I snagged a bottle of Bulgari Black at Nordstrom Rack for a song, plus a bunch of cheapie fun Nyx cosmetics (lip pencils and cream eyeshadow), and ordered some samples of various Haus of Gloi scrubs, inspired by your review of them not too long ago. All rewards to myself for finishing moving into the new place, of course!

    1. It’s so weird but since I’m “aggressively” going through my products, I ask myself “why do I keep using things that I don’t like?” I guess it’s that feeling of wasting items but I mean, if a skincare product or shampoo product doesn’t work why should I keep using it? Life is too short to use stuff that you don’t love. But, I do this. There’s an Herbal Essences shampoo in the shower right now that I hate but I keep using it…So, good for you for throwing out stuff that isn’t good for you. (I’ve had bad experiences with Bliss too – makes my skin angry).

I have so many lotions. I don’t even remember buying them. And I use lotion many times throughout the day. I don’t get I still have so much.

Blackbird Vert is perfect for summer. I sort of wish it came with matching body/bath products too 🙂 I was just thinking about Desert Man the other day. It’s one of the only ones that I haven’t tried from the line and I thought about buying a sample because it sounds so good.

I was thinking the other day that NYX is probably my favorite cheapie brand. They have some really cool stuff (and they don’t test on animals!)

And congrats on surviving a move! It’s sure not easy. You really do deserve a reward. Hope you like the scrubs.

      1. I’m usually really stubborn about not wasting stuff either, and using it up, but the Bliss products were so awful on my skin that I knew I had to toss them. Maybe this is the start of being able to throw things away! 😉

  3. I really laughed when I read your line about wondering how many products you use in a day. I use a lot and my hubby is baffled by it. When we go away he is stunned by all the little bottles in my cosmetics bag.

    1. And what’s really bad is that when I travel, I do my best to condense my routine and carry less! And even then David will comment about how much stuff I use.

I have a feeling that even my own product “estimate” is actually less than what I use in reality.

  4. Used up my decant of Osmanthe Yunnan in July to combat the humidity. Love SheaMoisture, they make the only leave-in conditioner my boyfriend can use for his thick curly hair and I just started using their dry oil spray (very good so far). I finished off my decant of Figue Amere this weekend.

    1. Oh, you’ve reminded me to pull out my Osmanthe Yunnan decant…I love that stuff. Figue Amere is FB worthy to me.

Shea Moisture is great stuff. I haven’t tried the leave-in but I like the shampoo/conditioners. Their body products are so good. It’s been brought to my attention that they also sell facial care and cosmetics. How did I miss those?

      1. They just started carrying the Shea Moisture cosmetics at my Target! They look really cool BUT I am trying not to buy any beauty stuff at full price right now unless I actually need it. I did buy some of the Shea Moisture dry oil spray (on sale) plus two clearanced lipsticks, one Sonia Kashuk and one NP Set.

I used up a bunch of perfume samples as I’m trying to wear samples first thing in the morning, then I can wear my favorites later in the day. Didn’t try anything I want to buy though.

        1. I haven’t been to a Target in a very long time but this gives me a reason to! But, I really, really shouldn’t buy anything else either since I have too much stuff. I’ve got to use up or get rid of some stuff first.

I need to get on some “perfume schedule” like that. I test new stuff on my days off.
