I visited NYC in late January. On my trip, I visited The Elements Showcase. And yes, I’m finally getting around to writing about it. Now let’s jog my memory…
The Elements Showcase highlights niche fragrance and few skincare/cosmetics companies. It’s a mix of buyers, media, industry insiders, and I guess anybody else that wants to attend. It’s a bit like the Sundance of perfume events. I’m a talker and a sniffer so I regret not taking more pictures but I really enjoyed myself. And that’s what matters. (Plus, my camera’s flash wouldn’t work.)
I’m sure you’ve read other bloggers’ re-caps. So, I’m doing the Victoria stream-of-thought re-cap.
Perfumer, Rodgrigo Flores-Roux is the most adorable person on the planet. I want him to the be the Tim Gunn-ish spokesperson for the fragrance world. I love what he has to say. I love to hear him talk. And I love his cute little suits.
Chandler Burr was exactly like I expected. Please don’t take that comment as me being snarky. I like him. What you see is what you get.
Carlos Huber, the founder of Arquiste, is amazing. He’s a passionate guy, a true fumehead. After the show, I went to Bergdorf Goodman’s and we were talking to the Annick Goutal rep (who is awesome) and he told me to go to Barney’s and sniff the Arquiste line. I told him that I have and he went on to tell me stories of what a true fumehead Carlos is. He really is a longtime lover of perfume. I have so much respect for him as a person and I love his brand. It’s a beautiful collaboration between Carlos, Rodrigo Flores-Roux and Yann Vasnier.
Oh, Yann Vasnier…he’s sexy.
I met Gérald Ghislian, founder/perfumer of Histoires de Parfums. I want to be him when I grow up. He’s a badass. He’s creative and wears fur vests and velvet shoes. And he has awesome frames. Yeah, I never thought a guy would be my fashion icon, but he is. Actually, he’s just my icon.
Providence Perfume Co. – It made me so happy to meet Charna Ethier in person and find out that she truly is the nicest person on the planet. Seriously, the nicest person ever. Genuine, passionate, lovely inside and out. I wish her so much success. Her husband was there too representing the line. They are the cutest couple ever. And I applaud any husband that can put up with fumeheads for extended periods of time.
Ineke Rühland was there. She’s so nice and loves to talk so I love that. Expect launches from this line soon.
I met Neela Vermeire for the first time but it felt like I was with an old friend. She’s just that kind of person.
OK, now enough of the people, let’s talk perfume.
Bond No. 9 was there with their infinity of upcoming launches. DJ Ron told me that the Marriage Equality for All or whatever smells good. I trust him but I didn’t’ have the patience to smell them. Plus, our flagship Nordstrom will push these when they are launched. I’ll smell them soon enough.
Illuminum was there with their entire line including the Haute Collection. The Haute Collection is more my speed but I have no idea what the retail price would be in the States. I really liked Orange Blossom (which isn’t really an orange blossom) and Black Musk (slightly headshop-ish but in a good way). The team that they sent to represent the line was great. They were very knowledgeable and could put up with all of our annoying, nerdy questions.
I got a few bloggers hooked on Providence Perfume Co. Cocoa Tuberose and that makes me happy because that is a gorgeous scent. It deserves the love. Hindu Honeysuckle was “launched” there and it’s lovely. I’ll get around to reviewing these someday.
D.S. & Durga had a few interesting things. Wearable? I don’t know but interesting. One smells like a muzzleloader, that’s Spent Musket Oil.
M.Micallef is a wearable line. Their Ylang in Gold is lovely. It’s a banana ylang-ylang with gold shimmer. I need to get some. It’s so “rich bitch”.
All 3 of the Neela Vermeire Collection perfumes are stunning.
Now to the most interesting brand of the show – Di Ser. This is a Japanese brand that is shockingly wonderful. I don’t know if they are 100% natural but I do know that the perfumes smell like they have many naturals in them. The truest shiso ever. Their oud is oud-y and their geranium kicks Malle Geranium Pour Monsieur‘s ass.
Now to home fragrance…
Belle Fleur is an amazing high-quality fragrance line. The new rose collection is stunning. We talked to Meredith Waga Perez and she’s knowledgeable and involved. She didn’t want to do a rose collection because she feared it would be too cliché. I’m so happy that she went through with it! It’s gorgeous. All 4 of the La Magesté candles are luxurious.
Charlie Gardner makes candles in mint julep cups. That’s nifty. Expect a review from me someday.
Cire Trudon was there. I am familiar with the line. They have a couple of new fairy tale inspired candles coming out. They were a bit boring, too much of a novelty in my opinion.
The Hype Noses is a candle line that has many delicious, literal gourmand fragrances. I could see myself buying a few of these.
Joya candles are gorgeous and a great value.
I also got to meet fellow bloggers. Gaia of The Non-Blonde is even more amazing in person. And in case you were wondering, her hair is gorgeous and she should donate some to me – really not enjoying growing out my hair. Barney of Fragrant Moments is a great guy. I’d love to go record shopping with him. Harry of Cocktails & Cologne was really taking in all of the scents. And he’s so cute because he’d smell something and say “My wife would really like this.” – insert “awes” here. Mark of Ça Fleure Bon is such a cool guy. Down to earth and true to himself. I’m really surprised he isn’t from the West Coast 😉 He is so West Coast. Ida of Frangrantica is the most caring person ever, once again a person that I felt like I knew her forever but just met. All of the bloggers I met were awesome, instant connection.
A few perfumers were there but didn’t exhibit. Dawn Spencer Hurwitz was glowing. She’s one of those beautiful pregnant people. I know I’d be a bloated, irritable mess. Ver0 Kern is so kind. And she has an amazing sense of fashion. Once again, I want to be her when I grow up. We had an instant connection because we are both proud mothers of pug-mix things. Her Isador and my Moxi look like they could be sister and brother from anther mother, haha.
As you can tell, I had a great time. I think I’ll be back in August. I realized with my NYC trip, I need to visit NYC more often and get out of my PNW bubble. They still eat carbs in NYC, so that’s cool.
