Clarins Liquid Bronze Self Tanning for Face & Decollete Review

How I have I not written a review about this sooner? This is my favorite Clarins product. Yes, you can gasp. My favorite product from Clarins in a self tanner. This is shocking because #1 I like many Clarins products and #2 I like to look pale. Or so you think…

I don’t mind looking pale. Sometimes that’s why I wear dark or very bold pink lipsticks. I like this look. However, I don’t like to look Western Washington pale. Listen up, Twilight Edward’s pale skin is not difficult to achieve here. I get an Edward complexion by November. I’ll rock it for a bit, play it up with fall color collections, but by January I’m sick of it. I’m sick of looking like a damp, cold vampire. I want to have a glowing Jacob complexion. That’s where Clarins Liquid Bronze comes in.

This product is so natural looking on my light to medium warm complexion. It provides very minimal color on one application. It provides enough color that you’ll tell a difference but your coworkers won’t notice. I like this. I don’t want to look obviously “self tannned”. You are in control with the color and this makes it almost fool-proof. You can build it up over a few days. Since this is gradual, your tan will appear more natural. The color, on me and I have gold undertones, looks so natural. No orange, no mucky brown. It looks golden. It seriously looks like the color that I naturally tan. The colors fades naturally too. If you use a toner, use it on your neck too. That helps the product fade “naturally”. Throughout the year, I use this product on and off and I only I notice. This color looks so good that in the summer I don’t wear foundation or powder. It makes me look like I have a slight dusting of bronzer. In the winter, I wear it with a bit of mineral powder foundation and illuminating powders. I do this to play up my “glow”.

The formula is a thin lotion that doesn’t “run”. You can apply it with a cotton ball. Being an “experienced” Liquid Bronze user, I use my fingertips. I blend it on my “t-zone” on my cheekbones, like where I would put bronzer or where the sun would naturally hit. I take it easy around the brows and hairline . I do get behind the ears and down my neck and decollete. I wash my hands thoroughly. I apply this product at night. I wait about 10-15 minutes before I put my head on the pillow. When I use this at night, about 2-3 times I week, I do not use a moisturizer. I will use a hydrating serum underneath in the winter. In the summer, I don’t need moisture. I go to sleep, wake up, wash my face, and I have a very believable glow. Also, I exfoliate before applying this product with a gentle facial scrub.

I’m a fragrance person so what do I think of the smell? It is creamy and rich. It isn’t overwhelming and it isn’t tropical. It smells creamy and comforting, almost like a crème brûlée. It doesn’t get a “wet dog” scent like most self tanners. The scent is what attracted me to this product to begin with. I hate the smells of 90% of the self tanners on the market.

This is the best self tanner on the market! This is a product I can’t live without. It works for me. This is the best self tanner for pale to light  and light to medium complexions. This is a product for a person that wants believable color. This means buildable gradual color. You won’t wake up with a Kardashian complexion unless you went to sleep with a Kardashian complexion. I do see the name “Liquid Bronze” as deceiving. You can get to bronze with patience and lots of applications of product but this really should be named “Liquid Glow” or “Liquid Golden”. It gives more a golden glow than a beach bronze. It’s like if you went up one shade up with your tinted moisturizer.

I can see how some people may not like this. It all depends on your expectations. I wanted a very light warm glow to my sallow winter vampire complexion and something to play up the minimal color I get in the summer so I don’t have to wear foundation. I also wanted something gradual and that I controlled. I am a control freak. Do you want to look reality TV star bronze overnight? If you do, don’t waste your time with Liquid Bronze. Medium complexions will see no results from this product. Try Clarins Self-Tanning Instant Gel. Self tanners always run the risk of wearing off unevenly/streaking. Expect that possibility. And all self tanners will darken dark spots such as freckles or age spots.

The 4.2 oz bottle retails for $38 at Nordstrom.

    1. Oh, me too. This is one of those products that I keep reaching for. I haven’t bothered to even try/sample another self tanner since using Clarins Liquid Bronze. This is it. There can’t be anything better on the market.
