Welcome to EauMG, the only fragrance blog in the world that appears to dislike By Kilian Amber Oud. It has taken me forever to write this review. I doubted my dislike. Was I in a bad mood? Was the weather too cold? Too hot? Have I lost “it”? I’ve finally came to terms with that the fact that I don’t like Amber Oud and I don’t have to. Hear me out…
Amber Oud opens as a sweet benzoin and labdanum with some hot spices. It’s a spicy, clove amber with a ton of benzoin. With time, the bay starts to stand out on me. It took me a bit to identify it as bay and not cornichon/pickles. It seriously wears as cornichons on me for way too long. This “pickling spice” has ruined the perfume for me. And then I get salami. With time, Amber Oud gets better on me. It turns into a dry amber woods with creamy vanilla and some sandalwood.
Notes listed include amber, oud, bay leaf, cedarwood and vanilla. Launch date 2012. PERFUMER – Calice Becker
Give Amber Oud a try if you like amber. Or if you like perfumes like Profumum Ambra Aurea, Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Ambre Precieux, The Body Shop Amber Oud, and/or Huitieme Art Myrrhiad. Amber Oud is unisex.
Projection is average. Longevity is surprisingly below average. This wears about 2 hours on me max. I have not had this issue with any other By Kilian fragrance.
The 1.7 oz EDP retails for $395 (craziness IMO) at Luckyscent.
Victoria’s Final EauPINION – Bay leaf amber…which is like cornichons on my skin. It’s not a bad fragrance and it has many fans. But, it goes all deli in a sacred temple on my skin.

LOL. I don’t really like this one either, but I didn’t really expect to, because I don’t like amber that much.

Amber is versatile. It can be sweet or it can be resinous. It’s an accord. I usually like amber (not as much as I used to but I like it). I was surprised to not like this one. It has too much bay in it for me and it smells like vinegar on me too.
I’m happy that I don’t like it because of its price. One less thing to add to my list!
I was surprised TO like it – I’m not much of an amber fan myself, but this one is so smooth. Lots of oud, lots of sandalwood. No pickles, which I can certainly see would be annoying.

Cornichons…that’s more appropriate for the price tag of this 😉
It’s one of those that when it works it and when it doesn’t it’s a deli. Calice does great work so I don’t doubt its beauty.
I AM an amber fan but I almost never like agarwood (unless it’s in a very homeopathic quantity) but I liked Amber Oud and was very surprised by that.
Will I buy it? Probably not. I wouldn’t refuse a free (or a 70% off 😉 ) bottle but I didn’t like it enough to pay full price for the real bottle and it’s not special enough for me to go for a refill bottle. Maybe a small decant one day… Maybe.

The price of this one is shocking. Well, maybe not shocking but you must LOVE it to justify the price.
For some reason this one is sooo spicy on me. I really liked the dry-down but with a price like this, gotta LOVE it.
Have you smelled Loverdose? I thought it smelled exactly like grape soda and salami. Not very wearable if you don’t work in a sandwich shop.

I haven’t tried Loverdose on skin. Sprayed on paper at Sephora and all I got were the top notes of grape soda. I figured the rest would smell more like tooth decay than gout…
