An Intro to Glossybox USA

Glossybox is a beauty subscription program that is now available in the US. Their US PR contacted me and sent me their May Glossybox.

About me – I’m a cosmetics and fragrance addict. I keep up with this stuff. I’m up on brands and launches. Wanting to be like my “normal” friends, I subscribed to Birchbox. I was a member of Birchbox for over a year. I feel out of love with Birchbox. Because I’ve subscribed to Birchbox, I will be comparing Glossybox to Birchbox.

My Glossybox 1st impression: The box is much larger than Birchbox’s. The packaging is adorable. The tissue paper has icons from all around the world: Eiffel Tower, Tower of Pisa, Statue of Liberty. The box happens to be my favorite color combo of black and a blushy cosmetic pink.

What was in my April Glossybox? Tons of cool stuff.

C.O. Bigelow Body Lotion in Lavender & Peppermint – Very large sample, 5.2 fl. oz. It smells medicinal and I can already tell I won’t be buying it but it’s a nice gift from a brand that I trust.

Glossybox

basq Cucumber Tea Soothing Eye Gel – Full-size It’s .5 oz (retails for $24 FYI). I can’t wait to use this stuff in the summer. It will last at least 6 months.

Cargo EyeBronzer Eye Shadow – This is a full-size product (retails for $22) . It’s a loose shimmery bronze eyeshadow.

Kryolan High Gloss in Toffee – Full-size (retails for $18). Years ago, I was a makeup artist and my favorite brand was Kryolan. It’s not easy to find unless you are in a metro area with a makeup artist union…or lots of drag queens. I am so happy to have this in my Glossybox. It’s the perfect peach nude for light complexions and smells like cupcakes.

OPI Nail Lacquer in Kiss Me On My Tulips – Full-size polish (retails for $8.50). Ironically, this was on my to-purchase list. This was going to be my next nail polish purchase. It’s a satin pink. Delighted that this was in my Glossybox.

Erno Laszlo Hollywood Collection – Sample packs. I’ve been obsessed with this limited edition collection for a month now. Rumor has it that these are the skincare products that our favorite stars used: Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Great Garbo and Ava Gardner. I’ve been wanting this collection but didn’t give up the dough for it. Now I can sample it. Once again, delighted this in the box.

Glossybox

So, yeah, damn you Glossybox PR because now I’ll be starting a subscription. I hope that it is this good every month and not that their PR read my mind and put awesome stuff in here for me to go nuts over. It’s like they read my mind, seriously, all I needed was a Lipstick Queen lipstick to think that. I really hope that each month’s box is this good because if it is, I highly recommend this service.

How is Glossybox different that Birchbox? It’s more expensive monthly ($21). You are guaranteed at least 5 products. I received 4 full-size products, 2 “travel sized”, and one generous “collection” of samples. You pay more, you get more. I also think because this is International, you will see a diverse group of products. I think of Glossybox as a subscription program for the serious skincare, makeup, beauty person. Birchbox is more of an introduction to beauty products.

I also hear that you get to tailor the Glossybox to your needs by filling out a survey. You also get points for providing feedback on the products. The points are a coupon for the Glossybox store (like what Birchbox does).

You can find out more info about this service at Glossybox.

  1. what do you think for us companies? Is being in one of these boxes a good move, or a total waste of our precious money b/c each month there’s a whole new slew? Thoughts?

    1. I know there are subscription programs that specialize in natural products. I’ve never tried any of those.
It’s hard to say. From a marketing/PR perspective, I have no data. It seems like something that would work best for a larger company that can take a loss.
As a customer, I have been exposed to new products through these and a few have resulted in full-size purchases. I can’t say that my only exposure to these products would have came from a subscription program. I may have found out about them sooner in later (in a retail store, blog review, etc.)

    1. I really hope the next box is as good and this wasn’t some awesome intro only deal.
I wonder if there is one of these out there that deals only in niche skincare…because that would be awesome. That’s what I’m most interested in as well.

  2. Wow, Erno samples! While I seem to recall the Hollywood products not being for my skintype, I’d still try them anyway. I wonder if I can find an Erno counter that would give me samples… 😉 Thanks for the links to other reviews. I hope the next box you get doesn’t disappoint. I can’t wait to see what’s in it.

    1. I know! Erno samples! I was surprised to see those in there because isn’t the Hollywood set limited edition? I hope the next box is this good.
Go ask the Erno counter. I haven’t tried them yet but it seems they are more for dry skin.
