Aether Arts is a new niche perfume line by Amber Jobin. The “Burner” series is a collection of perfume inspired by Burning Man. Each Burning Man has a theme. If you didn’t know that before, now you know. No. 2 A Roll in the Grass is inspired by the “Rites of Passage” theme.
The perfumer says:
“Rites of Passage was the art theme for this Burning Man festival. I interpreted Rites of Passage to be those awkward yet thrilling—perhaps even illicit—first times you tried something, like smoking weed or losing your virginity. Inspiration led me to a grass scent, with not one but two types of grass. Burning Man is held in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, there is no water, no vegetation, only sun and dust. I loved the irony of creating a grass perfume for that environment.”
Now I admit that I was like “whatever” with this theme mainly because I don’t like awkward firsts. I’m not a nostalgic person like that. Nor do I think these “firsts” define me or define my life as I live it now so I don’t reminiscence over them. But, this is me and I realize others like to look back. Amber’s goal with this fragrance is well-defined and I believe she achieved it. It’s a green fragrance, naive and joyous and then it surprises you.
A Roll in the Grass reminds me of a picnic. I get fresh grass and basil with a fruit cocktail- strawberries and lime juice. From a distance, I mainly get strawberry jam with crushed green leaves (galbanum). It’s “sweet green” and actually realistic like a strawberry patch. As far as the marijuana in this, it’s more of the smell of someone that has been smoking vs. the smell of marijuana itself (if that makes sense). A Roll in the Grass is a slow burner. Hours and hours later I get a rather traditional chypre with patchouli, oakmoss and lots of vetiver. With the carefree, late spring opening, I was surprised by what it became. I rather enjoyed this unexpected turn. It is like what I said before about firsts. They may not define who we are now, but I have to give it to Amber for reminding me that in some way they do shape who we become. We lived and we learned. This is the importance of “firsts”.
Notes listed include grass, Mary Jane accord, basil, oregano, fir, grapefruit, petitgrain, bergamot, jasmine sambac, rose, fruits, franikcense, galbanum, patchouli, oakmoss and vetiver. Launched 2013. PERFUMER – Amber Jobin
Give A Roll in the Grass a try if you like sophisticated fruity perfumes or chypres. Or if you like perfumes like Perfume Pharmer Strawberry Passion, Estee Lauder Aliage, Ramon Monegal Cherry Musk, Vero Profumo Rubj and/or Aedes de Venustas EDP. A Roll in the Grass is unisex. I think it’s a great choice for daily wear and spring/summer wear.
This is a perfume oil. It wears closely to the skin but has above average longevity. I get at least 9 hours of wear from it.
The 9ml bottle retails for $91 at Aether Arts etsy shop. Smaller sizes and samples are also available for purchase.
Victoria’s Final EauPINION – Imagine a “green” strawberry fragrance that reminds you of a spring picnic and then it turns into a classic chypre. That’s A Roll in the Grass.

This was fun to read, firstly because I enjoyed the perfumer’s statement about her loving the irony of creating a grass perfume for Burning Man, because where it’s held there isn’t any vegetation. That is for sure – my husband went there twice and came back with everything covered with silty, almost talcum powder-like dust. Yep, the only grass at burning man is the kind they smoke (which my husband isn’t into, but I got his report). 😀
What also was fun to read was your thoughts on awkward firsts. Yes, some firsts are fond to recall, but not the awkward ones, usually. 🙂 Your description of the actual perfume itself was quite good too. I probably won’t be checking it out, but it sounds unique and kinda fun.
I thought it was cool to make grass for a desert, very clever and fun…and that’s Burning Man 🙂
I’ve never been, would like to but I don’t do well in sunshine and heat. I honestly don’t know how people can do drugs and “party” in it. I’d dehydrate like raisin and die. But, maybe that talcum dust preserves you? 🙂
Oh, I admit that I’m a bitter sentimental person 😉 Not all of my firsts were bad. I went to Disneyland for the first time last year. That was cool.
I think it’s a good perfume. I often get asked about marijuana OR strawberry perfumes and I think this is a good one to suggest.
