1960’s Fashion – Get the Makeup Look of Anna Karina

Anna KarinaIt should come to no surprise to anyone that I have been obsessed with Anna Karina for sometime. One of my artistic and beauty icons for many years. I’ve been out of my “French New Wave” fashion phase since my early 20’s. But, lately, I’ve had a yearning for thick bangs, long hair, and heavy eyeliner. Well, the only thing I can do now is the makeup (and even that has changed, not as easy to get such a crisp eyeliner look these days). Here’s what I did to get this 1960’s Anna Karina inspired look:

FACE: Usually with 60’s eye makeup dominated looks, I start with eye makeup. Not this time. I need a finished palette before I start with eye makeup like this. First, I applied Shiseido Stick Foundation in O20. I blended with a Beautyblender sponge. With a concealer brush, I applied MAC Studio Finish Concealer in NC30 under the eyes. With the sponge included, I pressed on Lancôme Precise Match Finishing Powder in Medium 10. Going up the hollows of the cheeks with a blush brush, I applied Everyday Minerals Matte Blush in Weekend Getaway, a matte peachy pink that is very light. This adds a little bit of color.

EYES: I don’t have bangs to cover up my brows, so I set them with NOIR Brow Gel. Take you concealer and apply to your eye lids. Take your pressed powder and apply to eye lids. This is your shadow. OK, you better know how to use liquid eye liner 😉 I’m using Milani Eye Tech Liquid Liner in Black. I like this product because I can hold it like a pencil. If you think your liner is too thick, it probably isn’t. This is all about using a heavy hand. My eye shape isn’t like Anna’s so I tried my darnest. I curled lashes and applied a few coats of Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara to top and bottom lashes (not shown). I applied a half set of Ardell Fashion Eyelashes.

LIPS: I lined my natural lip line with MAC Lip Liner in Spice, a matte mauve brown. Directly from the tube, I applied Lancôme Color Design Lip Color in Trendy Mauve, a muted browned mauve with a satin finish. I blotted. I then applied a little bit of pressed powder and pressed it on for a matte look.

Now for a fragrance. I want something smoky like By Kilian Incense Oud. Like with the French New Wave look, I’m going through a By Kilian stage again.

I apoligize for my crummy pics. It was one of those beautiful June, summer days in Seattle. You know, 55°, gloomy, and rainy. I couldn’t get the light right, but I think this gives a good idea of the look. It was funny because my husband said I couldn’t go to the gym with my Anna Karina eye makeup. He realized that was a mistake after saying it. I’m a Taurus and I’m stubborn and I do what I want. Even if it is ridiculous.

*I hope everyone has a great weekend. It is supposed to be nice here. But, my skin is mad at me and my sunscreen, may have to stay out of the sun 🙁 Why can’t I find a sunscreen that doesn’t make my skin mad as hell? Any product suggestions?

  1. I really like this look. I’m going to give this one a go, I think. Thanks for the tutorial! I think with this in hand perhaps even I (not the best makeupper) can re-create this look.
