April 1st – SoDo – Getting off on the wrong bus stop leaves me walking half a mile through working train tracks in winklepickers like some darkwave music video outtake. Mocking me, the smell of Southern fried chicken fills the otherwise light air. I stuck my head in a fancy moonshine still. Seriously.

April 2nd – Downtown – Foot pain that I’ve been experiencing for a week leaves me at home with a propped up puffy, tumid foot. I wear a musky perfume and slow roast a Jamaican jerk chicken feeling sorry for myself.

April 3rd – Downtown – As slightly swollen foot hits pavement to run lackluster errands, I’m hit hard with the springtime smell of early blooming magnolias – citrusy florals. A few blocks down at a bus stop, I realize that I’m not the only one intoxicated by the magnolias as I see a man shoving their petals up his nose in frantic delight.

April 4th – Belltown – Sitting in a salon chair with a gritty paste in my hair, I listen to a mind-boggling daft conversation that I wish I never heard. My brain never lets cracked conversations go. It’s like a curse. The smell of bleach and fancy Italian hair products scented with rose geranium. I arrive home soaked. In toto.

free squid drinks

April 5th – Belltown – Opening night. National outsider treasure Dina Martina performs her little ditties in a cramped, stuffy club that smells of mary j and IPAs. Dan Savage and is finely coiffed husband are there. I’m there with with my G&Ts. For about five years I’ve never clacked these red shoes together to go home. This is home. Why did Dorothy ever want to go back to Kansas?

April 6th – North Seattle – I’ve always said that there are only two types of foods in this world worth eating – aphrodisiacs and hangover cures. I go for the 2nd category today. Steamy pho. The smells of Thai basil and jalepeños soothe. I’m certain this giant bowl of broth has cured me. Warm rain awakens the aroma of oil on pavement. Toni Braxton muzak plays…

April 7th – Downtown – Spring cleaning was postponed due to Puffy Foot. OK, due to my laziness. Hours later, my house would make a 1950′s suburban housewife green with envy. And it smells like parsley cleaner which I highly recommend.

April 8th – Downtown – My consort bought scented poopie bags. I will never smell the scent of faux raspberry the same way ever again.

April 9th – Downtown – Smells of people both clean and unbathed herald me as I walk through the revolving door of the glorious antheneum. After making my selections, I take a seat next to a man that just so happens to be drinking a full-size bottle screw top of blended red wine as if it were a 16 oz bottle of Diet Pepsi. Completely existing.

April 10th – Downtown – As I take the dogs out, it smells like a black licorice factory has erupted an aroma of waxy candies. But, as far as I know we do not have a black licorice factory in these here parts.

April 11th – Chinatown – Swinging open the rickety door, I get an overwhelming smack in the face of metallic, earthy pig’s blood. Fish heads. Pomelo. Basil. Cilantro. It’s an odoriferous vortex. I get a free carambola because I’m “glamorous”.

April 12th – Capitol Hill – Flower market dotted with scentless blue lotus. Rain falls heavily from the sky hitting my Tim Burton umbrella.

Team Dresch. There’s Donna.

April 13th – Capitol Hill – When the hands hit midnight, they flock to the stage for Team Dresch bringing with them the smells of acrid underboob sweat and overflowing pale ales. I’m surprised I still remember so many of the lyrics from the sluggish cassettes of my early teen years…

April 14th – Little Saigon – Fiery beetle juice essence may be exotic as it sounds.

April 15th - Downtown – A thick, suffocating air of sadness and a quick walk down a steep hill for chocolate truffles and merlot. Somberly, I sit on the La Chaise inhaling the rich aroma of German chocolates before I let them languidly melt on my tongue.

April 16th – Downtown – I spilled Bulgarian rose oil on the counter. Don’t cry over spilled Damask rose. I hope the granite enjoyed getting all lovey-dovey with this alluring aroma.

April 17th – Downtown – Booming steelpans. Seattle’s obligatory skunky weed vapor escaping the pannist’s lungs. Smudged mascara and raccoon eyes.

April 18th - Downtown – Rain on slippery streets. Ennui. Greasy alluvium oozes down the grates. You know the smell.

April 19th - Downtown- Despite the gray skies and vegetable crisper rain, everything smells enthusiastically green. Technicolor new buds strike against an aphotic sky.

April 20th – Renton – I thought that nothing could bring me to Renton. I was wrong. The smell of sizzling carne asade on a grill is one powerful thing (as is a cheap eye exam when you don’t have vision insurance).

April 21st – Pike Place Market – Cool, misty rain laminates my skin as I drag my hulking wheeled cart behind me through congeries of Texan tourists. The smell of their commodious hairspray follows me through the cobblestone street as it eventually mingles with empanandas and the obligatory skunky weed.

April 22nd – Waterfront – Sunshine conspires with a chilly wind making what should be a pleasant walk less than an enjoyable. Trails of cigarette smoke follow the man in faded tie-dye that always stops to tell me how much he likes my hair. On the way home carrying bottles of magical elixirs from one of the West Coast’s oldest herbal apothecaries, I get a clout of nag champa to the ‘ole sniffer.

April 23rd – Downtown – Ugh, horse shit. Now the cops are fighting stink with stink. This is how I imagine it smelled here during the Gold Rush. An industrious clambake of runaways from the Midwest, jezebels and drunks being corralled by lawmen on stallions.

April 24th – Capitol Hill – Perfect day. Coffee and chocolate. Snobby salts. Rose geranium cocktails. Waitress wearing too much Egyptian Musk. Hipsters siesta on the idle playing field. Fine linens from across the pond. Brussels Griffon puppy spotted on the walk home.

April 25th – Capitol Hill – Walking up the hill to a mini dinner soiree on a perfect, pleasant evening, I get a whiff of hedges that smell like honey. Two pixies in gingham dresses hold hands. Briskly walking down the hill on a crisp night, I get a whiff of leather bars, bubbly cider and cigarette smoke. Two polar bears in vests hold hands. I love this city.

April 26th – Downtown – The aroma of a jackfruit is shocking. It requires a Herculean explanation and I’m too unversed to give it. My best guess is to say it’s a blend of ABC Juicy Fruit bubblegum, boiling onions and curdled milk/neonate vomit. My house now reeks of it so badly that every window is now open to eject this grody smell into the city streets. But, it’s comfortable here and won’t budge.

kimonos

April 27th – Georgetown – Dingy old brewery now turned antique warehouse, watch your step. The smells of dust (both domestic and foreign) tangles with dank old factory basement. Dim lights barely illuminate the delicate patterns on antique silk kimonos. “Antique” Mudhoney plays on speakers above a wavering tansu.

April 28th – International District - Steam hits my lips as I inhale the smell of sliced scallions and boiled crustaceans. Stacked carts roll by. Slightly floral notes of pur-eh under the nose. On the way to the market, I smell freshly cut grass for the first time this year.

April 29th – Downtown – I often take for granted what a clean city Seattle is. Today there is a smell of “freshness” like mountain air mixing with city streets. Salt water breeze.

April 30th - Downtown - Disappointingly cool and dreary for most of the day. Buttery, flaky French bakeries and strong black coffee. A day of jitters and Sleater-Kinney.

Weekly World Fumes: March 28th, 2013

Celeb Gossip:

It’s an Easter weekend miracle, I don’t have any celeb gossip!!!

New Launches:

Indie perfume line, D.S. & Durga, has paired up with the color-blocking abusing clothing retailer, J.Crew, to launch Homesteader’s Cologne. Homesteaders are the last thing I think about when I think of J.Crew. And it’s inspired by Big Sur containing notes of eucalyptus, sage brush and kelp.

In May, Van Cleef & Arpels will launch Rêve, a feminine fruity-floral with osmanthus, pear and peony.

Yves Rocher will be launching Neroli, an affordable perfume with neroli, orange blossom and musk.

Yves Saint Laurent will be launching the flanker, L’Homme Libre Cologne Tonic. This one promises “more freedom” than the original with notes of lemon, basil, violet, aquatic notes and musk. You know the original was just too darn restrictive.

Montale is launching Aoud Greedy with notes of lemon, licorice, amber, patchouli and white musk. Strangely enough, oud is not a listed note. They’re being greedy. AND they’ll be launching Intense Cafe with notes of coffee, rose, amber, vanilla and white musk.

Perfume News:

Essie (the nail polish brand) has partnered up with Ralph Lauren and will be launching nail polishes to correspond the Big Pony perfume bottles. This is a limited edition set and will retail for $45.

Elements Showcase, a premier indie tradeshow, has partnered with Beautyworld Middle East in Dubai. The show takes place May 28th-30th.

Frink the Frug on the rug

EauMG Etc.:

It’s been a pretty low key week for me. The weather has been freakishly nice here with temps in the 60′s, clear skies and not too many showers. This weekend is supposed to be perfect; I’m trying not to get my hopes up.

I got a haircut, obviously. I also got a beautiful rug delivered this week that is lavender and cream. I have never decorated with lavender in my life and I’m rather glad that I am now. Next I’m on the hunt for yellow chairs. But, I think I may give up that hunt since yellow chairs aren’t easy to find. I’m thinking gray fabric and painting the legs a 60′s-ish gold/green. The yellow will be brought in with yellow throw pillows on the sofa. I’ll stop talking about home decor even though I want to keep talking about it.

My sister is a week past her due date. She still hasn’t picked out a name or even a trio of names to choose from. She doesn’t like my suggestions of “Mario Lopez” or “Ernest Goeztucamp”. I think they’re better than “Walking through a desert with a baby with no name”.

Have a wonderful weekend! And to those that celebrate Easter, have a great one! Please eat deviled eggs for me.

Victoria signing off, smell ya later!

Nom. Nom. “WTH?”

CBMusk is musk. It’s CB’s interpretation of Tonkin Musk; he’s shooting a bird at the synthetic musks used to replace it (even those his is synth; I’m sure of it). He’s trying to capture that certain animalic quality of musk. And let me tell you, he succeeds. Just look at the expressions on my frugs’ faces!

I get this oily turpentine accord over musk. And there’s a deep, dark forest with rotting biomass and slightly fruity chanterelle mushrooms. Civet has to be in this too. With time it warms up on my skin becoming rich. It’s fruity, funky and powdery. Warm. Surprisingly spicy. There’s more to CBMusk than musk. This is complex.

I think many people will use this for layering to add an animalic quality to other perfumes. Some people will find it too grotty. And then there are the people like me that are plenty happy wearing this alone (I’m not super sensitive to skank, sometimes I wonder if my skank radar is broken).

Notes not listed. Launch date 2005. PERFUMER – Christopher Brosius

Give CBMusk a try if you like dirty musks or skank. Try it if you like Serge Lutens Muscs Koublai Khan, Kiehl’s Musk CB Forest/Wild Hunt and/or Madini Musk Gazelle. Like I said before you can use this alone or under perfumes to add some “umph”.

I find projection to be average for an oil (close to the skin) and longevity average.

The 1/2 oz perfume oil retails for $115 at CB I Hate Perfume.

Victoria’s Final EauPINION – A complex blend of rotting biomass, spices, funk and baby powder. It’s a good musk and I like it. Can be worn alone or layered.

*I have sniffed vintage tonkin musk. It does not smell like CBMusk but even Christopher admits that his creation probably doesn’t smell authentic. Real musk is heavenly and reminds me of champaca flowers and the purest skin. Saying this, I don’t feel that CBMusk is too far off. His version is just filthier and that has place in the perfume world.

Jan. 1st – International District – Rare, clear blue skies highlighting the snowy mountain skyline. Phaedon Rue de Lilas on my wrists. Walked to go get green tea cream puffs, so frigid and cold that it hurts the sinuses. Smells of fish market, roasted garlic and bulgogi.

Jan. 2nd – Downtown – Moxi expressed herself on the rug again. It’s like Secretions Magnifiques without any of the good stuff. For some reason there was a pile of sawdust in the elevator that smells like fir.

Jan. 3rd – Pioneer Square – Streets smell of kombucha or is that beer piss and garbage?

Jan. 4th – Capitol Hill – A strange, unexplained apparition of orris root followed me around for 30 minutes as I drink a pretty average Americano. A man ran through the streets shouting “Happy New Year!” until the police were called.

Jan. 5th – A Land of Loose Ends – Earthy, metallic, muddy. Cabins emitting the aroma of kerosene throughout the hills. Noticed little green buds on fruit trees, a little sign that life moves on, a reminder that I needed today more than ever.

Jan. 6th – Downtown – Sadly I did not leave home today and tried to catch up on work. I tried a few violet perfumes but had a craving for heliotrope.

Jan. 7th – Belltown- Doughnuts and coffee. Stressing over a deadline and craving carbs and sugar.

Jan. 8th - Downtown – I cut a yellow onion at noon. The smell never left my hands or the house. The frugs smell like a shrimp boat. Get me out of this condo.

Jan. 9th – Downtown – I baked cornbread for the first time in probably a year. It’s such a comforting aroma for an ex-Southerner. I would totally buy it in a home fragrance.

Jan 10th – Capitol Hill – “Oh my God! Do you smell that?” I hear as I walk out of a hip Syrian restaurant filled with ideas. “It’s not you.” And it wasn’t. I’m pretty sure it was “you” as it looked like you stepped in dog feces. Or at least I can only suspect it’s dog feces due to the proximity it is to the tree in the planting strip.

Jan 11th – Downtown – So cold it hurts the sinuses, a strange aroma of pipe tobacco and plastic wrap. A man poetically exclaims “Go Atlanta” at about every 5 steps. I’m sure it was some sport’s thing but his delivery was so iambic.

Jan 12th – Ballard – A perfume event, so many aromas. I love that smell of all of the perfumes mixing on my hands from removing their caps.

Jan 13th – Queen Anne – So cold I believe that no aroma could cut through the thick air because the day was incredibly neutral in the smell department.

Jan 14th – Downtown – My pillows smell like patchouli. And then patchouli spent the rest of the day stalking me at every corner.

Jan 15th – Downtown – I’m obsessed with LUSH Flying Fox. The house is filled with an animalic jasmine. It even permeates the halls. The neighbors can go “suck it” as they breathe in a honeyed jasmine.

Jan. 16th – Downtown – Woke up filling sick. The smell of vitamin C tablets. Saw a person on a bike get hit by a van and thrown over 20 feet. I really don’t want to associate any scents with this day.

Jan. 17th – Belltown - A thick fog hangs low in the city streets trapping the overpowering aroma of beef jerky.

Jan. 18th – Downtown – They’re touching up the wood paneling in the elevators and lobby. The varnish and stain smell sweet, chemical and I feel bad for liking it. I am not describing a Montale perfume.

Jan. 19th – International District-ish – Limes and lemons and lemons and limes. Juicing for a cocktail party.

Jan. 20th – Greenwood – Frankincense, coffee ceremonies and injera. It was a really great day.

Jan. 21st – Downtown – Chakapuli. It smells like spring in here: herbs, slow-roasted meat, vegetables. Never underestimate the power of comfort food.

Jan. 22nd – Downtown – For some reason my dogs smell like skunky weed. What have they been doing when I’m not home?

Jan. 23rd – Downtown – I realize what the skunky weed smell is and I wrongfully blamed my children. It’s an overripe pomelo. Bizarre. No rehab for the frugs.

Jan. 24th – Downtown – Paperback books.

Jan. 25th - Pike Place – Too much clam chowder will leave one feeling afflicted despite its savory, creamy aroma. Savory, creamy aromas can’t make up for everything.

Jan. 26th - Across the Continental US - Italians seated around me on the plane smell of mossy things. So many variations of mossy, mossy perfumes.

Jan. 27th – Upper West Side – All I really need to tell you is “sniff-a-thon”, so many perfumes, so little time. I may come across as skeptical at times but the world really does have some beautiful perfumes.

Jan. 28th - Midtown – Perfumes. Smell them. Perfumes. Analyze them.

Jan. 29th – Chelsea – French herbs, coffee with cream, good conversation, Pierre Guillame, good day. Except I smelled the only skunk in all of NYC. It sprayed outside my hotel.

Jan. 30th – Chinatown – Beef jerky and sweet breads hang in the humid air. Subways smell of stagnant water. The world feels so Mad Max at times.

Jan. 31st – Greenwich Village – A feeling of spring in the air that awakes some smells from hibernation. On the long flight home a man was wearing too much patchouli. I’m fine with that. Happy to be home.

Frink the Frug, four-legged fragrance commentator, here to talk about one of my newest fragrance obsessions: LUSH Dirty Body Spray. LUSH Dirty is a new range of new products that are designed on the layering concept. I wouldn’t know too much about this. I prefer “layering” by snuggling under crushed velvet throws, not grooming products. But, I hear that humans don’t appreciate their own fur so they do crazy things with it. That’s why LUSH offers Dirty in a Shower Gel, Shaving Cream, and Hair Gel too.

LUSH Dirty Body Spray captures the aroma of me rolling around in my family’s herb garden… trampling thyme, pulverizing lavender, and mutilating tarragon. They hate when I bathe this way but it gives me an invigorating rush. I am a house dog after all, I need something herbaceous to enliven my confined senses. And I’m a dog. I like to be a little dirty. Clean is oversold!

Dirty opens up as a blast of aromatic artemisia. I destroy every tarragon plant that I encounter; I’m an herb hooligan. Dirty reminds one of “green licorice”. Imagine all of this in alcohol. (Shh…I know nothing about absinthe!) It’s strong but then it settles. I then get “lime thyme”, thyme with a slight citrus aroma. Dirty smells very green. Under the green, I get some medicinal lavender oil with cooling tarragon. Dirty smells fresh, green, and invigorating. OK, it smells “clean” and I can admit that I like it because it is called Dirty.

I like this fresh outdoors fragrance, it makes my curly tail wag, but I can’t wear fragrance. I don’t want companies to test on animals… Mom has decided to use this spray to freshen up the manly musk aromas that I leave in the house. Why don’t humans appreciate their pets’ refined and devoted aromas? Dirty comes in an industrial strength spray bottle and mom uses it like a room deodorizer by misting one spritz of Dirty in the air. I think that this is a better “air” scent than a body scent (smells like a natural deodorant), but that’s from a frug’s perspective. I’ll never appreciate the concept of body deodorant! Dad hates the smell of Dirty, what does he know? He has a strong dislike of licorice and anise aromas, yes, including tarragon, because he is tasteless. Not every male in the house can be as cultivated as bantam ‘ole me…

I say give this body spray a try if you are looking for a natural deodorant body spray for summer. I’m told that this one cools (Mom says) so that may be refreshing for sweaty days. I forget that you people don’t pant yourselves to coolness… I also recommend this if you want to smell like crisp tarragon, herbs, or absinthe. You may also want this if you want a natural air freshener or room deodorizer. It’s in a spray bottle, so you can spray the heck out of garbage pails and musty closets. This natural scent lingers.

The Dirty Body Spray in the strange industrial strength spray bottle retails for $19.95 for 6 oz. and is available at LUSH. Mom says that there is a Gorilla Perfume in this scent that she wants to try. I have no desire to encounter and sniff a Dirty Gorilla. Oh, daffy humans!

Morrissey’s birthday!!!

Question of the Week: Which products would you confiscate from your 16 year old self’s makeup bag?!

EauMG’s Answer: Nothing. In fact, I wish I could get that makeup bag back! I feel like I had really great taste in makeup, even at 16. I’ve always been a “vintage” fashion gal so it was always about perfectly groomed brows, great skin, and a polished lip. I learned something from embarrassing, disco-era teenage photos of my mom. I decided that I would never be photographed in trendy ridiculous makeup. Whenever I was photographed, I had simple, tasteful makeup. This doesn’t mean I didn’t wear body glitter or other silly trendy things, it just means that I choose to remember myself as being more “classic”. I don’t remember any blunders

Kicking off National Pet Week, Mom asked for me to discuss my favorite ‘fumes, guest posting here on EauMG. I’m a guy of class and sophistication, enjoying the finer things in life. These things may not appeal to your tastes: salmon skin chews, toasted seaweed treats, deep “frinkle” cleaning (the facials I’m given to clean my esteemed wrinkles), The Wendy Williams Show. But trust me, I enjoy the finer things in life. I’m a perfect match for my family. Mom is obsessed with aromas and so am I. I love to go on “sniffing tours” (car rides, walks). I spend afternoons sniffing Mom’s wrist when she samples a new fragrance, providing my cultivated criticism.

Blessed with good looks and a dapper personality, there are some things that I lack. Like most extreme brachycephalic pets, I have respiratory issues. Nothing serious, but I do snort and get heated easily. I joke that my short snout impacts my fragrance choices. I tend to go for loud fragrances. This makes sense because I have a loud personality in a petite, cobby body. Like Frenchies and pugs, we frugs have mucho charisma! I love spicy and powdery. I’m all about Orientals. And animalic leathers; they are my gourmands. I rarely respond to florals unless they are pushy jasmines. Citrus makes me happy, bringing out my puppy bark, but Mom doesn’t have many of these in her collection. I’ll convince her to add a few soon enough… Here are a few fumes that make my curly tail wag:

A. Estee Lauder Cinnabar – A powerful, spicy fragrance with jasmine, clove, and patchouli. This really wakes up my senses. I’m ready for my morning sniffing tour now!

B. Halston Z-14 – This is a loud aromatic fragrance, my favorite masculine for the days when I feel like looking out the window, barking at anybody that walks in my territory. Lavender and leather and barking until I’m hoarse? I’m one happy frug. Don’t judge me.

C. Molinard Habanita – I love this powdery vetiver and leather. This is my Swagger McDagger fragrance.

D. Estee Lauder Youth Dew Amber Nude – I love amber. And this Tom Ford creation makes me swoon. You know that pugs and pug mixes love Tom Ford, right. Check this out.

E. Bvlgari Black – This is my comfort fragrance, a blend of vanilla and smoky leather. Both of my parents wear this. It’s like chicken kibble soup for my frugly soul. And I love that the bottle is surrounded by chew toy material.

These are just a few of my favorites. Don’t even get me started on how much I love Tauer’s Lonestar Memories! Think of it as a starter perfume guide by America’s favorite smushed faced fellow.

The Lipstick League – week of 3.28.11

I love this 1940′s era photo of the classy Rosalind Russell with an English bulldog. This picture makes me want an English bulldog even more! I think Frink the Frug needs a brother

It was a busy week for me, but I’m on vacation now. Time to catch up on sniffing new smellies!

Question of the week: What new spring product are you loving the most or are most excited to try?

EauMG’s Answer: Spring is a much needed time of optimism for me. Isn’t it for everyone? I love to bust out the lighter and more carefree fragrances. Bye-bye rich spicy orientals and sweet vanilla and tobacco fragrances! See you this fall… I love to lavishly apply “purple flowers” like lilac and violet perfumes. My current love is Caron Aimez-Moi. And for makeup, I retire my almost black shades of plum and wine for hot pinks and coral-reds. Nails go from deep wine to sheer peach.

Clumps of Mascara – finally got Shellac’d! The question is…will it really last 2 weeks without chipping? Only time will tell…

EauMG – Is EauMG seeing green fairies? Maybe. Review of aroma M Geisha Green perfume.

Nouveau Cheap – There’s a product at the drugstore that can truly fix a smudged nail and Nouveau Cheap’s got the pics to prove it!

Lipglossiping – Gets overtaken by a sudden lipstick urge, and we all know that’s one itch that NEEDS to be scratched!

Orange to LA – Uses the new Lancome ‘Warm Lavande’ Color Design Eye Shadow Quad to create a look for a night out with her husband. Who doesn’t like purple?

Pink Sith – Gives you a sneak peek at the NEW Guerlain Rouge Automatique lipstick. It’s a packaging Hoor’s dream!

Phyrra’s – Independent Spotlight for April is with Venomous Cosmetics! Learn about Tracy & her fascination with the vibrance of creatures found in nature, as well as her makeup.

Vampy Varnish – Shows you some colorful Inglot Eye Shadow Swatches!

we heart this – You’ve heard of RevitaLash, but does it really work? Take a look at our before and after pics and decide for yourself!

Beauty Junkies Unite – was never too crazy about mood lipstick, but these mood nail polishes from In The Mood are right on trend with spring’s color forecast!

How about you, readers? Which new spring product are you loving the most?

So here’s a pic of Frink the Frug when he was a little frugly baby. What a mutant! Only a face that his adopted mother could love! His ears never could decide what to do: bat eared like a Frenchie’s or floppy like a pug’s. Grown-up Frink’s ears are either like the pic above about 40% of the time and the rest of the time down like a pug’s, often reminding me of “old timey French bulldogs”.

Here’s some popular post by members of The Beauty Blog Network this past week:
