More 1930’s Fashion: Get the Makeup Look of Joan Blondell

1930's blonde actress Joan Blondell

So, this photo is rouged to heck and I can’t get a similar look without doing the same, but I still like the makeup look. It’s a playful look that works for light to medium complexions. Here’s what I did to get a 1930’s Joan Blondell inspired look:

FACE: Being rouged, the face is quite “cakey”. With my fingers, I applied Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation in Nude. People like to use a buffer brush with this foundation, I use my fingers and then buff out with e.l.f. Studio Powder Brush. Under the eyes with my fingers, I applied Covergirl Simply Ageless Concealer in Corrector. With a folded cosmetics sponge, I applied Clarins Loose Powder in Transparent. Cheeks are very bare. I have to have a little color or I look sick. With the e.l.f powder brush, I applied Alima Pure Matte Blush in Apple Blossom, a pale pink, to the apples of my cheeks. This gives a wee bit of color and keeps me from looking like a corpse.

EYES: I’m not loving these brows and I dislike most 1930’s brows. So… I filled in brows with e.l.f. Studio Eyebrow Lifter & Filler in Ash. I used NYX Eyeshadow Trio in Nude/Taupe/Dark Brown. I applied Nude to the entire lid area with a fluffy shadow brush. Under the brow, I used the e.l.f. lifter to highlight the brow bone. In the crease, I blended in Dark Brown with a medium sized blending brush. I lined the top lash line with NARS Eye Liner Pencil in London, a matte smoky gray. I curled lashes applied a coat of Estee Lauder More Than Mascara in More Black to top and bottom lashes. I applied Ardell Invisiband Lashes.

LIPS: I lined lips with NYX Slim Lip Pencil in Mauve, a natural pink shade, and my favorite lip liner. Directly from the tube, I applied Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Pink Spice, a shimmery medium pink. With my finger, I applied a small amount of Lancôme Juicy Tubes Lip Gloss in Fruity Pop, a pale pink with pink shimmer, to the center of the bottom lip.

Now for a fragrance. I want something evergreen and invigorating. No clue why. Maybe it’s the snow on the ground. I’m thinking Acqua di Parma Mediterraneo Tuscan Cypress.

Overall I like this look, it’s a “modern” interpretation of Joan’s look. I really do like this Clinique lipstick shade and I wear it frequently during the day. This week I got my hair cut, so it is much shorter and looks different. I like my haircut. I have been wearing my hair 40’s for the past few months. That’s my “go to” hair inspiration. But, the new cut is very Diana Ross. It’s my early 60’s Motown look. I’ve brought out the shift dresses and white tights! Have a good weekend!
