1920’s Fashion – Get the Makeup Look of Anny Ondra

Actress Anny Ondra

Anny Ondra was a Czech actress that played in a few very, very early Hitchcock thrillers. I love this pic of her because it’s very modern. This is wearable 1920’s makeup. Everyone did not look like a “flapper” or at least what we think of when we think vampy lipstick flappers with blunt bangs. Here’s what I did to get an Anny Ondra inspired makeup look:

FACE: I applied Shiseido Stick Foundation in O20 and blended with a makeup sponge. Under the eyes, I blended Covergirl Simply Ageless Concealerin Corrector. With the puff provided, I blended Coty Airspun Powder in Neutral. With a medium size blush brush, I applied L’Oreal True Match Blush in n3-4 Innocent Flush, a matte warm peach.

EYES: Brows aren’t my favorite. They are thinly penciled and dark, very 1920’s. I filled in brows with Benefit BrowZings in Medium and set with the wax. I applied a small amount of NYX Eye Shadow Base in Skin Tone (not pictured). The eyes are all about a smudgy 1920’s look. For eyeshadow, I’m using Wet n Wild ColorIcon Palette in Lust. I applied the matte light mauve shade on the lid. On the outer corner in a “V”, I blended the medium matte plum shade. In the crease, I blended the dark gunmetal gray shimmer. I also took this shade and lined the bottom lash line. I then blended the deep matte eggplant in the crease as well. Under the brows, I blended the off white shimmer. And in the inner corner I applied a bit more of the matte mauve. On the top and bottom waterline, I applied Lancôme Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony. I lined the bottom waterline halfway. I curled lashes and applied a few coats of Maybelline Full n Soft Waterproof Mascara. I then applied a set of Ardell Lashes.

LIPS: I lined lips with Rimmel 1000 Kisses Lip Pencil in Coffee Bean, a dark brown with reddish undertones. I rounded the cupid’s bow (which I wouldn’t do for a “modern” look). Directly from the tube I applied Clinique Different Lipstick in Tenderheart, a warm nude brown. I then blotted on a tissue.

As for a fragrance, I went with the mossy Clinique Aromatics Elixir.

What are your weekend plans? Any holiday parties? My goal is to avoid all retail this weekend. We have a little gathering on Saturday. There better be bubbly. Have a great weekend!

    1. I still like the color. I’ve been through a few tubes in my lifetime. I think it was my first lipstick or at least one of the firsts.

  1. This is a really gorgeous look, one of my favorites that you have done. I suspect it will not look as good on me (in part b/c I don’t have your skill and in part b/c I have hooded eyes), but I will try this one anyway. 🙂 Thanks for posting it!

    1. Rumor has it that the eyeshadow is 50%+ off at drugstores because it’s being discontinued 🙁 It’s a great set of eyeshadows. There are some wonderful makeup tutorials for hooded eyes using the same shadow.
      Have a great weekend!

    2. I did this look for a New Years Day party, and while I too lack the skill that Victoria has, I was able to pull it off despite my disapearing eyelids. I just wish I could have gotten my hair to cooperate!

      1. I bet you rocked it!
Don’t get me started on my hair 😉 Today I tried to do a cute look but ended up with crazy Beethoven hair. Yikes :S
